Interesting Questions, Facts, and Information
Firefly
Serenity. Joss Whedon has said that he wrote the spaceship as the tenth cast member - as important to the series as all the actors.
Nathan Fillion. Nathan Fillion had a major guest role on another Joss Whedon show, 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' after 'Firefly' was cancelled. He played Caleb, the evil priest who worked with the First in 'Buffy's' final season.
Mal and Wash. Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk voiced the commentary for this episode on the DVD. They said their bodies ached from having to act as if they were being electrocuted.
Mal hired him as a pilot. While Alan Tudyk (Wash) plays her husband on the show, in reality Gina Torres (Zoe) married Laurence Fishburne in 2002.
Doctor. Sean Maher, along with the rest of the cast, had to learn several phrases in Chinese as all the characters speak Chinese fluently.
Simon. Kaylee is a nickname - her real name is Kaywinnit Lee Frye.
Cattle. The nutrition bars were in the pilot 'Serenity', and the seeds and fertilizer were found on the ship the Reavers had destroyed. I made up the gold.
River. Simon saved River from a mysterious Academy that experimented on her brain. There are people who are trying to capture her and send her back. Scary!
Vera. Jayne attempts an unsuccessful trade with Mal: Vera for the woman who claims to be Captain Reynolds' wife.
Serenity Valley. Mal and Zoe fought together at the Battle of Serenity Valley, hence the name of his ship.
A herd of cattle. Unfortunately, the crew runs into a bit of trouble trying to unload their cargo...
After seeing the new cargo (the correct answer to question 4), Wash comments that he'd much rather have smuggled something else. What item does he mention? | The Universe of "Firefly"
|
Beagles . Wash claims they have "smallish droppings!"
In the episode entitled "Ariel," River slashes at Jayne with a kitchen knife. What was her reasoning for doing so? | The Universe of "Firefly"
|
River thinks Jayne looks better in red. In one of the never aired episodes, River threatens Jayne with the fact that she can "kill you with my brain."
Yellow. The decorative vines painted along the walls are supposedly the work of Kaylee, although we receive that information in one of Joss Whedon's episode commentaries.
A fire which sweeps through the ship. River specifically mentions that she did not get Simon anything, and while Simon and Kaylee do almost kiss for the first time in this episode, they are rudely interrupted by Book.
strawberry . Book also brings a variety of vegetables, which he shares with the entire crew.
Legal prostitute. Although she is a prostitute, Inara is one of the highest class individuals on the ship.
The Alliance. The browncoats were forced to surrender at the battle of Serenity Valley, although the war was not officially over at that point, most people believe that that is where the Browncoats were done for.
None of these. No one really knows what her actual name is, these are just some that she used.
Canton. "The hero of Canton the man they call Jayne!"
This is a line from the "Ballad of Jayne" in the episode "Jayne's Town".
A layered cake. Zoe was the one who commented, "Too much fooferah, I want something with some slink."
This land. "...and we shall call this land...This land!"
We hear Wash say this as he is playing with toy dinosaurs in the pilot episode "Serenity".
Public relations. Simon is the one who asked this question, after an interesting conversation at the dinner table. In "Out of Gas" we learn about how Mal persuaded Jayne *not* to kill them by offering him better pay if he joins their crew.
A deck of cards. "I *was* gonna give you a deck of cards."
Okay. "Mercy is the mark of a great man. *stab* I guess I'm just a good man. *stab* Meh, I'm alright."
Joss Whedon. Joss also created "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel".
What's the name of the planet that the crew of Serenity lands on to complete their cattle transaction? | "Firefly"-"Safe"
|
Jiangyin. Reading a painted plate in the gift shop, Simon reads, "Jiangyin Prairie Paradise." He then makes fun of the plate, making Kaylee feel a little bad, because she really liked it.
Beaumonde is the planet Serenity was headed to before Saffron hijacked the ship. Sihnon is where Inara was born, and Triumph is the place they picked up Saffron in the first place.
After they've been kidnapped by hillfolk, never to be seen again, River picks Simon some berries. What kind are they? | "Firefly"-"Safe"
|
Hodgeberries. Simon: "Remember when we found those giant Hodgeberry bushes on the Camberson's estate? We thought they'd grown wild..." Then River tells him they're poisoned, causing him to spit them out.
River: "He believed her! Made a face."
Simon: "You are such a brat!"
Inara says that it seems like every store on every border planet "has the same five rag dolls and the same carving of-what is this? A ____?" | "Firefly"-"Safe"
|
duck. Inara: "What is this? A duck?"
Kaylee: "It's a swan. I like it."
Inara: "You do?"
Kaylee: "It looks like it was made with...you know, longing. Made by someone who really longed to see a swan."
Inara: "Perhaps because they'd only heard of them by rough description."
What does it say on Shepherd Book's Ident Card that gets him such fast treatment on the Alliance ship? | "Firefly"-"Safe"
|
We can't see the card, and nobody explains.. This is one of the mysteries that the series, unfortunately, never got to resolve. Who is Shepherd Book, and what is his past? Many times during the series, Book shows himself to be far more knowledgeable about the world of crime than a Shepherd ought to be, and this scene in "Safe" is one of the most mysterious. Unfortunately, the camera angle is such that we can't see what's on his Ident Card, and nobody spills the beans.
At the beginning of the episode, River gives a speech about how quickly the human body can be drained of blood, given adequate vacuuming systems. After she's finished, how does Mal describe her? | "Firefly"-"Safe"
|
morbid and creepifying. River: "The human body can be drained of blood in 8.6 seconds given adequate vacuuming systems."
Mal: "See, morbid and creepifying I got no problem with, long as she does it quiet-like."
Corpsified and gross is how Wash describes Zoe in his fake eulogy for her in the episode "Shindig." Naked and articulate is how Mal describes Saffron in "Our Mrs. Reynolds"-it's his excuse for falling for her feminine wiles. Rich and fancible is how Jayne describes Simon in "The Train Job."
