 Horatio Hornblower
Ioan Gruffud. Ioan Gruffud has expressed an interest in continuing the series on his own, since A & E has decided not to produce any more episodes.
C. S. Forester. C.S. Forrester wrote eleven "Horatio Hornblower" novels. The A & E movies only extend through the third, entitled "Horatio and the Hotspur."
Maria. Maria is played by Julia Sawalha, who also stars as Lydia Bennet in A & E's "Pride and Prejudice."
Mr. Bush. Paul McGann portrays Lieutenant Bush, who is older than Hornblower yet is his subordinate in rank.
They are quarantined from the Indefatigable.. When Horatio and some of the crew from the Indefatigable are exposed to the Black Plague, they must be quarantined from the rest of the men and stay aboard a vacant ship until they are considered no longer contagious. Amazingly, none of the men contract the plague.
Styles. Styles does not have boils on his face, but bites from rats. He and his comrades hold secret contests to see how many rats they can kill with their mouths. Horatio discovers these competitions and puts and end to them.
Pellew. Captain Pellew, played by Robert Lindsay, develops a father-son type relationship with Horatio.
It is a ship that is engulfed in flames.. Horatio climbs aboard a blazing fire ship in this episode, and steers it clear of the Indefatigable, which is in danger of catching on fire as well.
His wife is pregnant.. Horatio has just finished telling Maria that he wants to be a better husband, and then she tells him, "You're going to be a father!"
