Presidential Firsts
Lyndon Johnson. Franklin Roosevelt was the first to appoint a woman to his cabinet.
David Atchinson. Because Zachary Taylor was a staunch Episcopalian and refused to be sworn in on a Sunday David Atchinson was president for a day.
John Q. Adams. Louisa Adams was born in England.
Chester Arthur. Richard Nixon was supposed to have said 'I wish I had thought of that.'
John Adams. John Adams was the first President to live in the White House, moving in during the last years of his presidency. Thomas Jefferson was the first one to spend all his terms there.
Franklin Roosevelt. Franklin Roosevelt made an appearance on the new medium. Eisenhower was the first to publically televise a press conference.
John Tyler. John Tyler, who took over after William Henry Harrison's early death, was extremely unpopular in Washington D.C. The Senate effectively ruled without him, overriding nearly every veto he gave. He wasn't even considered for election in 1844.
Rutherford B. Hayes. Hayes was the first to use a telephone as president. Hayes was also the president whose controversial election effectively ended post- Civil War Reconstruction in the South.
Andrew Jackson. Andrew Jackson is the only President to perform this feat. Just so you know, Clinton and the Congress have balanced the budget, but there is still a huge national debt remaining.
William Howard Taft. William Howard Taft hated being president and was relieved when he lost the 1912 election. He was later appointed to the Supreme Court as Cheif Justice, swearing in other presidents. He happily presided there until his death.
Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt was president when the Wright Brothers invented the airplane and was the first person to ride in one once they made it safe enough.
William Henry Harrison. William Henry Harrison gave a two hour long speech for his inauguration in really lousy weather. He contracted pneumonia and died one month after taking office.
Calvin Coolidge. Silent Cal was born on July 4, 1876. Three presidents died on July 4th. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson on July 4, 1826, and James Madison on July 4, 1831.
Bill Clinton. It may be surprising, given the things Clinton did in his second term. Clinton was indeed a Rhodes Scholar, and the first President to have been one.
John F. Kennedy. FDR was the first to appear on television in 1939
