Index: M : Morissette, Alanis

Special Sub-Topic: Alanis' Feast On Scraps.

From which Alanis song do the following lyrics appear: 'I remembered you the moment I met you. With you I knew God's face was handsome.'?

Simple Together. This song is probably my favourite of all the material Alanis has written/co-written. It has a haunting, beautiful melody that hangs around in my head for days at a time.

Which song do these words come from: 'I wish I could tell the world, 'cause you're such a pretty thing when you're done up properly.'?
Hands Clean. This is the last track on the CD. Originally included on the 'Under Rug Swept' album, and this acoustic version, in my opinion, is even better.

Can you name the song the following lyrics belong to: 'I have waited for you and adjusted for you, and I'm done.'?
Bent For You. Despite all the criticism Alanis receives about screeching instead of singing, and accusations of being too introspective she continues to churn out catchy and affecting songs. 'Bent For You' is yet another quality piece of writing.

Which song are these lyrics from: 'For my self-love being so embarrassingly conditional, for denying myself to somehow make us compatible.'?
Sorry To Myself. A very thought provoking song. We often worry about things we've said and done to other people but neglect to realise all the bad things we have done to ourselves. This song is about Alanis apologising to herself. She says 'sorry' for things she has put herself through, for not being true to herself and giving herself negative messages. E.g, 'I'm sorry to myself, for treating me worse than I would anybody else.'

Can you name the Alanis song: 'I had grown disgusted by your small-minded ceiling, to imagine myself bolting had not been difficult.'?
Unprodigal Daughter. This is the sixth track on the CD. I always interpret this song to be a reference to Alanis' father. 'The Couch', a song from a previous album 'Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie' was inspired from a conversation with her father, (Alan Morissette) but was slightly more complimentary in places.

Who produced and directed the 'Feast On Scraps' DVD?
Alanis Morissette. Glen Ballard was Alanis' writing partner on 'Jagged Little Pill' and co-producer on 'Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie'. Pierre Lamoureux was the live concert director and Chris Lovett was the editor.

Can you match these lyrics to the appropriate Alanis song: 'Sometimes I feel more bigness than I've shared with you. Sometimes I wonder why I quell when I'm not required to.'?
Fear Of Bliss. This song is about self-sabotage. Sometimes Alanis is afraid of good things happening to her because it's unfamiliar, so perhaps unconsciously, she sabotages the situation. E.g, 'Sometimes I feel this is too good to be true I sabotage myself for fear of what my joy could do' We all do it whether we're aware of it or not.

Which Alanis song contains these lyrics: 'You and me are on this pendulum together. And you and me with scarcity still fueling.'?
Sister Blister. This is a song about competing with other people. Another good, catchy tune.

Can you identify the song these lyrics are taken from: 'I've held you up like a deity like you're the sole owner of wings.'?
Purgatorying. I interpret this song to be about staying in the same place emotionally and spiritually. About not wanting to move on, but I could be way off target when it comes to what Alanis had in mind when she wrote it.

And finally, which song is this: 'How dare I ignore an outstretched hand. How dare I ignore a third world country.'?
Offer. This song is about Alanis taking stock of all that she has, family friends, fortune etc. I think she is singing about the realization that she is a lot better off than some but also the responsibility that comes with success and how sometimes she can't deal with it. E.g, 'My generosity has me disabled by this my sense of duty to offer.'
