Fun Trivia: 1 : 1960s WS

Special Sub-Topic: 1960 World Series: Game 7

Game seven of the 1960 World Series was played in New York.

    f. It was played at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.

Who started the game pitching for the Yankees and Pirates?
Bob Turley (Yankees) and Vernon Law (Pirates). Terry of the Yankees and Haddix of the Pirates ended the game. Pittsburgh's Haddix was given the win the game, while Terry received the loss after giving up the home run to Mazeroski.

Which Pirate hit a home run in the first inning to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead?
Rocky Nelson. The Bucco first baseman gave his team an early lead, and almost ended the game in the top of the ninth when he caught Yogi Berra's ground ball smash and almost doubled up Mickey Mantle.

Who finally broke through against Vern Law to get the Yankees on the board in the fourth inning?
Bill Skowron. Skowron's blast over the right field wall trimmed the Bucs' lead to 4-1.

Who came into the game for the Yankees in the third inning, and did not allow the Pirates to extend the lead until the Yankees took it back?
Bobby Shantz. Shantz kept the Pirates in check until the Yankees erupted with four runs in the sixth inning. Ironically, Shantz would pitch for the Pirates in the 1961 season.

Who hit into a double-play against Shantz to snuff a Pirate rally in the seventh?
Bill Mazeroski. Maz would go on to redeem himself in the ninth inning by hitting a home run to win the game.

In the eighth inning, Bill Virdon hit what looked like a sure double-play ball to Yankee shortstop Tony Kubek. But what twist of fate gave the Bucs new life?
The ball hit Kubek in the throat. Kubek was rushed to the hospital with a crushed larynx, and Virdon was safe.

A major mental mistake by a Yankee pitcher in the eighth inning allowed the Pirates to take a stunning 9-7 lead. Who failed to cover first base on Roberto Clemente's ground ball?
Jim Coates. Coates' blunder gave Hal Smith the opportunity to capitalize, and he took it by launching a three run home run over the left field wall.

Who scored the tying run for the Yankees to force the Pirates to bat in the ninth?
Gil McDougald. MacDougald scored when Rocky Nelson couldn't quite double off Mickey Mantle on Yogi Berra's ground ball smash to Nelson. Nelson stepped on the bag to retire Berra, but Mantle snuck his hand back to the bag in time to elude Nelson's tag, and MacDougald sprinted home with the ninth Yankee run. Harvey Haddix then retired Bill Skowron, and the stage was set for one of baseball's greatest moments.

At 3:36 p.m. on October 10th, 1960, Bill Mazeroski sent Forbes Field into delirium, by sending a Yankee pitch over Yogi Berra's head to give the Bucs a 10-9 decision, and the World Series title over the mighty Yankees. But what was the count on Maz?
1 ball and no strikes. Ralph Terry's first pitch was too high, and Maz clobbered the second offering from Terry to win the game.
