Answer: July 21, 1861

The date of the battle was also the birthday of General Jackson's wife, Anna Jackson.
2. Who commanded the first Confederate brigade engaged in the battle?

Answer: Colonel Evans

Evans's brigade was on the far left of the Confederate line and met the flanking Federal Army, holding them long enough for the Confederate Army to shift its lines to meet the threat.
3. Who commanded the Federal Army during the battle?

Answer: General Irvin McDowell

Hunter and Miles commanded divisions under McDowell, and McClellan was commanding Federal forces in what is now West Virginia at the time.
4. Where did the first heavy fighting occur?

Answer: Matthew's Hill

The brigades of Generals Bee and Bartow reinforced Evans on Matthew's Hill to further stall Federal forces. Henry House Hill was where the Confederate rallied after falling back from Matthew's Hill. Chinn Ridge lies near the battlefield and was a location of heavy fighting during the 2nd Battle of Manassas/Bull Run, and Bull Run flows to the northeast of the battlefield.

Answer: the bayonet

That phrase caused General Bee to say "There stands Jackson like a stone wall", giving Jackson his legendary nickname of "Stonewall". Minutes later, General Bee was fatally wounded, dying within hours.

Hunter was wounded first, then Heintzelman. Both wounds were painful but not serious. Most unfortunate for General David Hunter, it was also his birthday.

General Smith was wounded before the attack began and did not officially command the brigade. General Early's brigade was already on the field and joined in the fight after the attack commenced. Stuart commanded cavalry and had aleady been on the field for a while.

Answer: Oliver O. Howard

Later Howard led the Federal XI Corps whan it was routed by the flank attack at Chancellorsville, and also on the first day of Gettyburg by yet another flank attack.

Answer: General Miles

General Miles division had not participated in the main battle and was held in reserve near Centreville. The other division commanders were either wounded or overseeing their retreating forces.

Many of the Federal soldiers at the battle had signed enlistment papers for only 90 days hence earning them the term "ninety-day volunteers".
