This small primate lives in Central and West Africa. It has large eyes and big ears. It is a nocturnal mammal. What is it?

    potto. The brown colored pottos weigh about one kilogram and are 30 to 40 centimeters long. They are solitary animals that search for food, mostly fruit, at night.

This animal which looks like a cross between a giraffe and a zebra, is a member of the giraffe family. What is it?
    okapi. The okapi is found in the rainforests of Africa. It is a very shy animal and is seldom seen. It reaches up to five feet in height. It lives on grass and leaves.

This antlered member of the Cervidae family is the only one where the female also has antlers.
    reindeer. Reindeer are found in North America, where they are called caribou, and in northern Eurasia. Most of the reindeer found in Eurasia are domesticated. Reindeer have very large feet which enable them to walk on the spongy ground of the tundra and also are good for digging in the snow.

What is the largest member of the rodent family?
    capybara. The capybara can be up to four feet long. It spends much of its time in water and has partially webbed feet. It lives by rivers and lakes in South America. The nutria is also known as the coypu.

What are hooved animals known as?
    ungulates. Ungulates are found worldwide. Ungulates used to be one order, but now are divided into five. Chief of these are Perissodactyla, those with an odd number of toes, e.g horse (one toe); and Artiodactyla, those with an even number, e.g.antelope.

This mammal is covered with scales, and has a long sticky tongue. It is found in Asia and Africa and can grow up to six feet long.
    pangolin. The pangolin is also known as the scaly anteater, although they are not in the same order. It eats termites and ants.

To what order do shrews, moles and hedgehogs belong?
    Insectivora. Lagomorpha - hares and rabbits Chiroptera - bats Rodentia - rodents

What is the marine mammal of the far north, belonging to the family Cetacea, that has a tusk?
    narwhal. It is only the male that has a tusk. Narwhals only have two teeth. In the male one of these teeth grows and spirals until it becomes the tusk.

What is the name of the order of animals to which anteaters, armadillos and sloths used to belong?
    Edentata. The name comes from edentatus which means to knock out teeth. Members of this order have no or very few teeth. Edentata is also known as Xenarthra.

    porcupine. There are two groups of porcupines those found in the Americas, and those found in Europe, Asia and Africa. The name comes from the Latin porcus - pig, and spina - thorn
