Fun Trivia: D : Dog Breeds Mixture

Special Sub-Topic: Aghhh! What Kind of Dog is That?

The name I'm thinking of is sometimes a diminutive of John or James. Leaves make a certain noise when they move in the wind. Putting these two clues together, what dog breed do you get?

Jack Russell & jack russell terrier. Jack is sometimes used as a diminutive of John. Leaves "rustle" in the wind. The Jack Russell Terrier is a wonderful little dog full of zest and character. It can be stubborn, but it generally loves life--and its owner. Jack Russells were named after their original breeder, Parson John Russell.

The first part of this dog breed formed part of Sir Francis' Drake's famous ship. The second part means someone who brings something back. What dog is this?
Golden Retriever. Drake's ship "The Golden Hind" is one of the most famous ships in history. Someone who brings things back is a "retriever", so we get Golden Retriever, a charming dog with a friendly, easy-going nature.

The first first word in the name of this dog breed is an adjective applied to a small, upright rose tree that has been grafted. The first syllable of the second word sounds like an exclamation you might make if something smells bad. The second syllable is contained in a word that means "walked like a duck". What dog breed is this?
Standard Poodle. A small upright rose is sometimes called a "standard" rose. You might say "Pooh!" if you smell something bad, and to walk like a duck is to "waddle". Standard Poo(hwad)dle turns into Standard Poodle.

This kind of dog is a new cross, but is getting better known. The first syllable has something to do with chemistry or experiments. The second syllable is the same as the name of the Egyptian Sun God. The third syllable sounds like an idle drawing. What kind of dog is this?
Labradoodle. The Labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador and a Standard Poodle. It is a pleasant dog, good for people with allergies. The clues work out to "Lab" from "Laboratory", "Ra", the Sun God and "doodle", the drawing.

This dog breed has a two word name. The first word means big, or wonderful. The second word implies a compatriot of Hamlet. What dog breed is this?
Great Dane. The Great Dane is one of the biggest dog breeds. "Great" can mean big or wonderful, and Hamlet was Prince of Denmark, which made him a Dane.

This dog breed has two words. The first is the name of a different animal entirely that is sometimes hunted. It has a reputation for cunning. The second word sounds rather like a synonym for "fear", but has an extra syllable in the middle.
Fox Terrier. A fox is an animal that is sometimes hunted, and fear = terror. Add a syllable in the middle and you get "terrior". Fix the spelling and - Fox Terrier. Fox Terriers are sometimes black and white, brown and white or tri-colour. They're sprightly little dogs, rather like Jack Russells.

This dog has a one word name. The first syllable (when pronounced in Australia, anyway...) sounds like the part of Morse Code that isn't a dot. The second is another word for "dog" with one letter missing. What dog breed is this?
Dachshund. Morse Code is dot and "dash". A dog is a "hound". Drop a letter and you get "hund". In Australia, the name "dachshund" is often pronounced as "dash-und".

This dog has a two word name. The first word is a colour. The second sounds like the very old-fashioned name for a doctor or nurse. What dog breed is this?
Blue Heeler. "Blue" is a colour. (So is red, but blue has four letters.) A "healer" was a historical name for doctor or nurse. The Blue Heeler is a working dog from Australia. A doughty worker, the heeler isn't really suited as a pet in town.

This dog has a one word name. The first syllable is a colour. The second is another word for "dog". What kind of dog is this?
Greyhound & grayhound. "Grey" is a colour and "hound" is another word for "dog". The Greyhound is an elegant and very fast dog often used for racing.

This dog breed has one word. The first syllable is something used for punishment or sometimes for directing an animal. The second syllable is a word for a friendly familiar animal living with an owner. What dog breed is this?
Whippet. A "whip" is used for punishment or to direct a horse in harness. A "pet" is a friendly animal that lives with an owner. Therefore, the dog in this question is the slim, elegant whippet.
