Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What sporting breed is known for its grace, swiftness, and red fur?

Answer: Irish setter

In 1878, the Irish setter was first recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) as an official breed. They recognize only three colors which are chestnut, mahogany, and red - white markings in the fur are also allowed. Because they like to please, they are usually pretty easy to train.
2. Which is a toy breed known for being charming, loving, and mischievous?

Answer: Pug

In 1885, the American Kennel Club first recognized the pug as an official breed. The pug was once a companion of the Chinese emperors, and then the mascot of Holland's House of Orange. They can be silver, apricot-fawn with a black face mask, or all black.
3. What dog in the non-sporting group is known for being confident, intelligent, and funny?

Answer: Lhasa Apso

In 1935, the American Kennel Club recognized the Lhasa apso as an official breed. Lhasa apsos were watchdogs at monasteries in the Himalayas a thousand years ago. They have long hanging coats, and the fur on their nose makes it look as though they have big mustaches as well.
4. What breed of dog, found in the working group, is a faithful guardian that is always black with one of three other colors: rust, mahogany, or tan?

Answer: Rottweiler

In 1931, the American Kennel Club first recognized the Rottweiler as an official dog breed. They are descendants of the mastiffs. They have short-haired coats.
5. What dog in the working group is a faithful, yet mischievous, dog and the mascot of schools such as the University of Connecticut and Michigan Tech?

Answer: Siberian husky

In 1930, the American Kennel Club recognized the Siberian husky as an official dog breed. Huskies are one of the dogs that are commonly used in the Iditarod races as they are made for very cold weather.
6. What breed from the working group is courageous and extremely faithful, and comes originally from Japan?

Answer: Akita

In Japan, the Akita is a symbol of good health, happiness, and longevity. They tend not to trust strangers (whether they are humans or other dogs) so they need to be socialized right from birth. However, for those they consider friends and family, they are loyal to a fault.
7. This breed, which belongs to the toy group, is the tiniest of the dog breeds. Which dog breed is it?

Answer: Chihuahua

The Chihuahua originated in Mexico and is named after the state of Chihuahua, Mexico. They may be small, but they have big hearts and are very loyal to their owners. They tend to be one-person dogs. They often bark a lot and are full of energy.
8. What breed of dog in the toy group is always white, though it may also have lemon or tan in its coloring as well, and is known for being playful?

Answer: Maltese

As the name suggests, the Maltese originated in Malta. Maltese make good watchdogs. They love to play, and they do not shed very much.
9. What non-sporting breed would you have "spotted" this dog in, which is often seen on firetrucks?

Answer: Dalmatian

Dalmatians are white with spots. The spots can be various colors such as black, liver brown, orange, lemon, black & tan, or liver & tan. When they are first born, they are all white, but start getting their spots within the first ten days after they are born.

The spots continue to develop for the first year and a half of their lives. No two Dalmatians have the same spot pattern, and there is no set amount of spots either. On average it can be anywhere between 50-250 spots.
10. What breed, of which Snoopy is one, belonging to the hound group is known for being friendly and curious?

Answer: Beagle

Beagles are very loyal dogs, and very smart as well. They love to play and have fun, and are very good with children, and other dogs. They do tend to bark a lot, however.
