Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the Titan that fathered Zeus?

Answer: Cronus

Cronus was the son of Gaia and Uranus. The throne of Uranus was overthrown by Cronus. Cronus had six children with his wife Rhea. They were Hera, Hades, Poseidon, Demeter, Hestia, and the youngest Zeus. Cronus swallowed five of his children when they were young.

While Rhea carried Zeus, she plotted her young son's escape. After Zeus was born, Rhea wrapped a stone in a blanket and gave it to Cronus pretending it was Zeus. Cronus ate the stone and Rhea was able to get Zeus away before his father learned the truth of what had happened.
2. Hera was not the first wife of Zeus. Who did the mighty god take as his first wife?

Answer: Metis

Metis was the daughter of a Titan and the goddess of prudence. Zeus used his first wife to help him go after Cronus. Metis gave Cronus an herb that would make him sick. Cronus vomited and released all of Zeus' brothers and sisters. Together, they conquered their father.
3. How did Zeus win over Hera enough that she married him?

Answer: He turned himself into a bird

Zeus took Hera as his second wife. Zeus fell in love with her and knew she loved birds so Zeus changed himself into a bird and flew into Hera's arms. Hera fell in love with the bird and so with Zeus. As the years passed, Hera became a jealous woman and Zeus became fearful of his wife.
4. Why did Zeus literally throw his and Hera's son, Hephaestus, out of Olympus?

Answer: Hephaestus sided with his mother

When Hephaestus sided with his mother Hera during an argument, Zeus picked him up by the ankles and tossed his son out of Olympus and down to Earth. After his father's rash treatment, Hephaestus always suffered with weak legs. After Zeus calmed down, he allowed Hephaestus to return to Olympus. While on Olympus, Hephaestus began to build thrones and weapons.

Although many Greek myths have variants, the incorrect options are not among them in this case. Information was taken from "D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths"
5. Zeus gave the orphaned Aphrodite to which one of his children?

Answer: Hephaestus

Hephaestus was the most steady of Zeus' children so Zeus gave Aphrodite to Hephaestus as his bride. Aphrodite came from the sea with no knowledge of her mother or father. 10. What happened to the first mortal who witnessed Artemis bathing in a stream?

Answer: Artemis turned him into a deer

The mortal who witnessed Artemis bathing was named Acteon. He was a hunter who came across Artemis while he was out in the woods. Artemis had sworn that no one would ever see her bathing. When she witnessed Acteon spying on her, she threw some stream water on him. The water turned Acteon into a deer. The hunting dogs he was with that day killed him.
11. When Zeus' son Hermes was young, whose cows did he steal to cause mischief?

Answer: Apollo's cows

Hermes was the god of shepherds, travellers, merchants, and thieves. He was the son of the Titaness Maia and Zeus. He sneaked into Apollo's cows one night and stole fifty of them. When Apollo learned what Hermes had done, he chased his brother up to Olympus. Zeus made Hermes return the cows to Apollo. Hermes was known on Olympus as the herald of the gods.

However, Persephone had eaten seeds from a fruit in the underworld. Because she ate of the food in the underworld, Persephone had to spend several months with Hades. While Persephone was with Hades, Demeter's attitude kept the Earth cold.
