Fun Trivia: A : Ashes Tests

Special Sub-Topic: Ashes 2002 Fourth Test

Australia won the toss and batted first. Who was the top scorer?

Justin Langer. Do you remember what Langer scored? If so, you got the next question correct! Australia declared on the second day at 6 for 551.

How many runs did the top scorer make in the Australian innings?
    250. This was Justin Langer's highest test score so far in his career, beating his 223 against India at Sydney in January 2000. He has scored thireen test tons up to this time.

An Australian batsman scored his sixth test century in a calendar year. Who was it?
Matthew Hayden. Yes, it was Matthew Hayden, who was first out for 102, when the Aussie total was 195. His other centuries were against South Africa (105 in Sydney and 122 in Johannesburg), Pakistan (119 at Sharjah) and earlier in this series against England (197 at the 'Gabba and 103 in Adelaide).

Four of the England bowlers went for over 100. Who had the best figures?
Craig White. It was a tough time for the bowlers! White took 3/133 off 33 overs, Dawson 2/121 from 28, Caddick 1/126 from 36, Harmison 0/108 also from 36, and Mark Butcher 0/52 from 13.

England never really looked like passing the follow-on mark of 352, at one stage being 6/118. However, one batsman hit three 6's and nine 4's in a rearguard effort. Who was it?
Craig White. Craig White was the man who took the long handle to the Aussie bowlers, scoring 85 not out, batting at No. 8.

So England were all out for 270, and followed on. But they fared much better in their second knock, passing the Australian total with only 4 wickets down. Which English batsman was largely responsible?
Michael Vaughan. Vaughan continued his excellent form with his second century of the series. He made 145, following his 177 in the Second Test in Adelaide.

Unfortunately for England, the tail failed to wag, and they were dismissed for 387, leaving Australia 107 to win. Which Aussie bowler had the best second innings figures?
Stuart MacGill. MacGill it was, with 5/152 off a mammoth 48 overs. Gillespie took 3/71, McGrath 1/44 and Lee 1/87. MacGill was only selected following the injury to Shane Warne.

Needing such a small total to win, Australia must have relaxed a little, and soon found themselves at 3/58. Did they win?
    Y. Yes, they won, but it was a bit of a struggle! They made 5/107. Top scorer was Ricky Ponting with 30.

What was the final result?
Australia won by 5 wickets. Australia reached their victory target with five wickets, and more than half a day to spare.

Who was Man of the Match?
Justin Langer. Langer's 250 in the first innings was definitely the highlight of the match. He batted 578 minutes, hitting one 6 and thirty 4's.
