Index: A : Auburn Tigers

Special Sub-Topic: Auburn Football: Iron Bowl Edition

From 1973 to 1981, Alabama reeled off 9 wins in a row in the series. Auburn finally broke the streak in 1982. What was the final score of the 1982 Iron Bowl?

Auburn 23, Alabama 22. Auburn won when freshman running back Bo Jackson lept over the goal line for a one-yard touchdown in the final minutes of the game.

The infamous "Punt Bama Punt" game was won by the Tigers on the strength of two blocked Alabama punts, both returned for touchdowns, in the fourth quarter of the game. Bill Newton blocked both kicks, and ironically enough, David Langner ran in both punts for touchdowns. In what year did this occur?
1972. The 1972 Auburn "Amazin's" team was not highly touted going into the season, but they finished with a shocking 10-1 record, with their only loss coming at the hands of LSU. Not to mention that they did it all without Heisman winning QB Pat Sullivan and All-American WR Terry Beasley, both of whom graduated the year before.

In the 1986 installment of the Iron Bowl, Auburn beat Alabama 21-17 in the final minutes of the game on a reverse by what wide receiver?
Lawyer Tillman. Tillman was a human highlight reel while at Auburn. Two of Auburn's former announcer Jim Fyffe's most memorable calls were the Tillman reverse and an acrobatic catch he made against Georgia Tech when all he could say was "Tillman, Tillman, Tillman!"

In 1993, Auburn capped its undefeated season by beating Alabama 22-14 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn looked to be in trouble when early in the game not only were they losing, but the starting QB Stan White got injured. His replacement came in and was simply amazing, leading the Tigers to a comeback victory. Who was he?
Patrick Nix. Pat became the starter the next year and went on to be one of the most accurate passers who had ever played at Auburn.

The 1989 Iron Bowl is etched forever into the hearts of the Auburn faithful. Auburn beat Alabama 30-20, but there was something even more significant about that game than the final score. What was it?
It was the first time Alabama had ever come to play at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The series had been played for years at Legion Field in Birmingham, AL. Early on, however, it had been played in Tuscaloosa and in Montgomery, so it was not the first to be played outside Birmingham.

Auburn won the first game ever played between the two teams?
    t. On February 22, 1893, Auburn played Alabama in Birmingham and won 32-22. Strangely enough, they played again on November 30 of that same year, with Auburn winning again, this time by a score of 40-16.

Which of these rivals did Auburn play in the 20th century more times than it played against Alabama?
All Three. The Auburn-Alabama series was suspended between 1907 and 1948 because of a squabble between the two schools over the amount of per-diem money to give the players on the trip to Birmingham. Just a measly 50 cents caused a 41-year rift in one of the greatest rivalries in college football. Auburn and Alabama played only 60 times in the 20th century, Auburn and Georgia played 97 times, Auburn and Georgia Tech played 84 times, and Auburn and Florida played 77 times.

The winner of the Iron Bowl gets a trophy. What is it called?
The Omicron Delta Kappa/James E. Foy Sportsmanship trophy. Athough the game itself is called the Iron Bowl (because it was played in Birmingham for many years and Birmingham is known for its iron-ore deposits and steel industry) and even though the winner does pretty much own the state for the next year, the trophy is the ODK/Foy Trophy. James E. Foy was the Assistant Dean of Students at the University of Alabama, and later became the Dean of Students at Auburn University. Thus he was chosen as the ultimate ambassador for sportsmanship between the two schools.

In the 20th century, there were only 5 games between Auburn and Alabama that were decided by a single point. They happened in 1949, 1972, 1982, 1996, and 1997. How many of those games did Auburn win?
    4. The only Auburn loss among them was in 1996 on a last minute TD pass by Alabama. The scores were: 1949 - Auburn 14, Alabama 13 1972 - Auburn 17, Alabama 16 1982 - Auburn 23, Alabama 22 1996 - Alabama 24, Auburn 23 1997 - Auburn 18, Alabama 17

Alabama didn't beat Auburn in Bama's hometown of Tuscaloosa in its first 4 tries (in 1895, 1901, 2000, and 2002). If you were to come up with a combined score for all these games, Auburn would have 91 points. How many would Alabama have?
    7. Scores: 1895 - Auburn 48, Alabama 0. 1901 - Auburn 17, Alabama 0. 2000 - Auburn 9, Alabama 0. 2002 - Auburn 17, Alabama 7.
