Fun Trivia: A : Australian Lingo

Special Sub-Topic: Aussie A's (Strine That Is!)

What, in the Australian vernacular, is an 'apple-eater'?

A Tasmanian. Tasmanian's are apple-eaters because Tasmania is the 'Apple Isle'! The Granny Smith apple, one of my favourites, was first grown (by accident) in Eastwood, New South Wales in the 1860's and they hold a Granny Smith Festival every year and one of our fellow Quizzylanders tours with a theatre group sharing the Granny Smith history! Thanks to Elle81 for this info!

What is the strine term for the afternoon?
Arvo. A typical Australian strine contraction, i.e, an Australian abbreviation!

If I don't know someone at all, I wouldn't know them from (in the vernacular), whom?
Adam. Adam, relevant to Adam and Eve!. Another strine phrase is, 'since Adam was a pup', which means, for a very long time, or from the beginning of time!

What, in strine, is an Aussie salute?
A movement of the hand to shoo away flies. An Aussie salute is the movement of the hand (including the arm) to brush away annoying, buzzing flies, specifically from the face! Also known as a Barcoo salute!

What, in strine, are 'anchors'?
Brakes. Anchors are the brakes, particularly in a car, i.e., 'to hit the anchors' or 'throw the anchors out', or alternatively the reins of a horse, or, even your feet! Joe Blakes are snakes and Joe Blow is a strine term for someone whose name you either don't know, or can't remember!

What's the Aussie term for 'have a good weekend'?
Avagoodweegend. Most famously used in an 'Aerogard' (personal insect repellant) commercial seen on Australian television!

Who or what, in the vernacular, is 'Auntie'?
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Also spelt 'Aunty', it is the ABC, i.e., the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Australia's government owned and run, advertisement free, nationwide television station!

What is the Australian term for an atypical member of the working class?
Aussie battler. Also, little Aussie battler!

Fill in the following to complete the Australian term used when you don't know what's going on. 'You don't know if you're . . . . . . or Martha!'
Arthur. To not know if you're Arthur or Martha means you have no idea what's going on!

If you finish something particularly difficult on your first go, what, in the vernacular, are you said to be?
Arsey. To be arsey is to get a difficult task completed on the first attempt, possibly through luck, or, alternatively, to be very lucky is to be arsey! Purportedly derived from 'tin arse'.
