Fun Trivia: J : Jacksonville Jaguars

Special Sub-Topic: Cool Cats

What was the Jaguars first season in the NFL?

1995. On May 19, 1992 the NFL announced that five cities were in the running for an NFL franchise and that two of these cities would be awarded one. The cities were Jacksonville, Charlotte, St. Louis, Baltimore and Memphis. It was announced October 26, 1993 that Charlotte would get the 29th NFL team and 5 weeks later, on November 30, Jacksonville were awarded the 30th. Oddly enough, by 1997 St. Louis had a team (Rams moved from Los Angeles in 1995), Baltimore had a team (Cleveland Browns moved in 1996) and Nashville, Tennessee had a team (Oilers moved from Houston in 1997).

Just before the inaugural season for both teams, the Jaguars lost a coin toss with the Carolina Panthers to determine which would receive the first draft pick.
    t. The Panthers won the first pick and traded it to the Cincinnati Bengals who drafted Ki-Jana Carter out of Penn St.

Who was the Jaguars first ever draft choice?
Tony Boselli. Boselli was drafted out of USC. He was a five time Pro Bowler. James Stewart was also drafted in the first round in 1995 (19th overall pick). Rob Johnson was a 4th round draft choice for the team that year and Mark Brunell was acquired from the Green Bay Packers.

Who was the first Jaguars running back to gain 1,000 or more yards rushing in a season?
Fred Taylor. After James Stewart suffered injuries and didn't pan out like the team had hoped, the Jaguars drafted Fred Taylor in the first round of the 1998 draft. That year Taylor rushed for 1,223 yards and Stewart was off to the Detroit Lions.

The team that beat the Jaguars in their first ever regular season game is the same team that they got their first win against four weeks later.
    t. The Jags lost their first game to the Houston Oilers 10-3. Four weeks later they beat the Oilers 17-16 in Houston.

What was the Jaguars won/lost record in their first season?
4-12. The Jags won four games in their first year. They beat the Houston Oilers, Pittsburgh Steelers and beat the Cleveland Browns twice.

Who was the first Jaguars receiver to gain 1,000 or more yards receiving in a season?
Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell did it the same year.. In 1996, Smith caught 83 passes for 1,244 yards and 7 TDs. McCardell caught 85 passes for 1,129 yards and 3 TDs.

The first time the Jaguars played the Carolina Panthers in the regular season they lost to them.
    f. The teams first met in Jacksonville in 1996, with the Jags coming out on top 24-14. Amazingly, in just their second season, the two teams fell just one win short of facing each other in the Super Bowl.

What team did the Jaguars defeat to win the first playoff game they ever played?
Buffalo Bills. The Jaguars beat the Bills 30-27 in a 1996 AFC Wildcard playoff game. They then downed the Broncos by the same score in the second round of the playoffs before falling to the New England Patriots 20-6 in the AFC Championship game.

Which team did the Jaguars destroy 62-7 in the 1999 playoffs?
Miami Dolphins. The Jaguars finished the 1999 regular season with a 14-2 record. Both losses came against their division rival Tennessee Titans. They then crushed the Dolphins before once again losing the AFC Championship game 33-14 to ... you guessed it, The Tennessee Titans.
