Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Somewhere in the mid-80s New York art band Sonic Youth made the claim they wanted to cover the Beatles' "White Album" (which is officially called "The Beatles") in its entirety. Sonic Youth was by then pretty much established as the city's main underground attraction, so this bunch of scruffy young 'uns called Pussy Galore wanted to beat them to the punch and covered an entire album by the Rolling Stones. Which album?

Answer: Exile On Main St.

Pussy Galore consisted - at the time - of Jon Spencer (now of The Blues Explosion), Neil Hagerty (later of Royal Trux, now with The Howling Hex), Julie Cafritz (later in The Action Swingers and Free Kitten, with Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon), Bob Bert (played with Sonic Youth before joining Pussy Galore, later played in The Action Swingers and Chrome Cranks), and Christina Martinez (Jon Spencer's wife; they played in Boss Hog together, which has been on hiatus since 2000). "Exile On Main St." was released in 1986, on cassette only.

It has since reappeared on various bootlegs. Sonic Youth never got round to recording their version of "The White Album". In 1988 they recorded "The Whitey Album", under the alias Ciccone Youth. This album had nothing to do with the Beatles however, but it did contain their underground hit cover of Madonna's "Get Into The Groove(y)".

Hence the bandname.
2. When Quickspace frontman Tom Cullinan wore out his copy of Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" album - we're talking about vinyl here, kids - he decided to record his own version. It was released in 2001 and has to be heard to be believed. Under what pseudonym did he release this record?

Answer: Dougal Reed

When the English underground guitar band th'Faith Healers split up in 1994 - they had been part of the so-called Camden-Lurch scene that also spawned Stereolab, Silverfish, Milk and Sun Carriage - guitar player Cullinan formed Quickspace Supersport. By the end of 1995 the British music press started raving about their singles, so what did the band do? They took a six month holiday.

In 1996 they reformed, minus half the previous members, and minus half their name. As Quickspace they released a couple of nice albums.

But their last one - 2000s "The Death of Quickspace" - made it seem like their story had come to an end. But in 2003 as well as in 2005 they released a single. Exciting innit?
3. In 1987, when quirky indie band Camper Van Beethoven were forced to halt the recording sessions of their album "Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart" due to their drummer breaking his ankle, they decided to cover a Fleetwood Mac album they found lying around in the recording studio. After a while they decided it was a bad idea and they dropped it altogether. But in 2002 the sessions were released anyway. Which album did they cover?

Answer: Tusk

Later the story about them recording "Tusk" in 1987 in order to kill some time turned out to be a joke. The band, who had split in 1990, had been revived in 2002. They recorded their version of "Tusk" then and they thought it would be a good way to garner some press attention for their reunion. Which worked quite well, in fact.
4. In 1998 Clear View Records released six records, by six bands, covering six different Ramones albums. Screeching Weasel did "Ramones". The Vindictives did "Leave Home". The Mr. T Experience did "Road To Ruin". The Parasites did "It's Alive". And Boris The Sprinkler did "End of the Century". Which album is missing from this list?

Answer: The Queers - "Rocket To Russia"

The Queers are neither queercore nor homophobes. They're just a bunch of silly old pubescent boys in arrested development. But their songs about girls, stupidity, the beach and all things scatalogical, are often quite fun; as are their song titles, like "Mrs. Brown, You've got an Ugly Daughter". Sadly, they're also quite directly responsible for things like Blink 182. Shame.
5. 1998 was a busy year for Ramones covers. Their album "Too Tough To Die" was also covered in its entirety. By whom, though?

Answer: Jon Cougar Concentration Camp

Coming out of the same scene as bands like The Queers, Screeching Weasel and their ilk, this band chose their name with the intention to shock. In a jocular way. What did John Cougar Mellencamp think of it? Anyone's guess. But this is what the FAQ-page of his website says:
Q There is a group called Jon Cougar Concentration Camp. Who are they, and does John have anything to do with them?
A They are a punk-rock group; one of their albums being a compilation of Ramones cover songs (bad ones at that, according to a review I read). And, no, John has nothing to do with them. Using that name perhaps was just an easy way for them to try to gain some notoriety and name recognition.
Huzzah!
6. In 2002 a female singer/songwriter released a live recording of Bob Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks" album. All the critics that reviewed the album said she was very brave. What was the name of the singer and her band?

Answer: Mary Lee's Corvette

Dylan himself was so taken with Mary Lee Kortes and her band that she was asked to open for him once, at the Hammerstein Ballroom. "He came on stage during my soundcheck and when I looked over he tipped his hat to me", she recalls. (quote from Uncut magazine, January 2005)
7. In 1988 Slovenian industrial/concept band Laibach covered the Beatles album "Let It Be" in its entirety, to illustrate the similarities between big rock concerts and totalitarian rallies. They left one of the tracks off the album, though. Was it due to a lack of room, time restrictions or general hatred of the song in question? Anyway, which song was it they left off?

Answer: "Let It Be"

"What's the difference between Wembley and Nuremberg?" they seemed to ask. Laibach have often been accused of being facists. It's an easy mistake. If you hear a deep booming voice recite the words "Get Back! Get Back! Get Back to where you once belonged!" over teutonic beats and Wagnerian sounds, what's a poor guy to think? Maybe that Laibach are arch-satirists, cleverly disguised as moustachioed military bruisers? Check them out! Now!
8. Jazz bassist Charlie Haden - who played with Ornette Coleman, Keith Jarrett, Don Cherry and Archie Shepp, among others - had three daughters. One of them, Petra Haden, released her version of a Who album in 2005. It was completely a capella, with her singing the instruments' parts as well. Which album by The Who did she cover?

Answer: "The Who Sell Out"

Petra, Rachel and Tanya were triplets, who used to sing together all the time. Petra and Rachel formed the band that dog, in 1991, and released three albums. They also performed together as the Haden Sisters.
9. In 1996 the leading French rock magazine Les Inrockuptibles released an album called "The Smiths is Dead". It featured lots of 'britpop' artists covering a track from the classic The Smiths album "The Queen Is Dead" each. Underneath there are four lists of bands. Which three bands did not contribute to the album?

Answer: Blur, Super Furry Animals, Suede

Most reviews of the album were rather unfavourable. And I must say, what Placebo do to "Bigmouth Strikes Again" is indecent; and most of the other tracks are just plain dull. Only the Boo Radleys produce an interesting version of the title track, while Bis make a spirited mockery of "The Boy with the Thorn in his Side".
10. It was the English press however who came up with the idea of letting a host of artists cover an entire album, with all proceeds going to charity. In 1988 the English music weekly NME released the album "Sgt. Pepper Knew My Father", where a variety of artists - alternative icons and chart stars - covered a track from the Beatles' album "Sergeant Pepper's Only Darts Club Band". They even released a 7" single, which was a big hit. Which two artists were on the A- and B-side of this single?

Answer: Wet Wet Wet / Billy Bragg

The entire line up of the album consisted of The Three Wize Men, Wet Wet Wet, the Christians, the Wedding Present, Hue & Cry, Billy Bragg, Frank Sidebottom, Sonic Youth, Courtney Pine, Michelle Shocked, the Triffids and The Fall. You can probably guess that the resulting album isn't very balanced. Seek it out only for the Sonic Youth and the Fall contributions. And Frank Sidebottom's worth a giggle as well.
