Special Sub-Topic: Dawnguard
From whom do you first hear of the Dawnguard and their problem with vampires?
Guards. Upon installation of the DLC talking to any town or city guard will initiate the quest to seek out the Dawnguard. You first must find their fortress nestled deep in Dayspring Canyon, within the Rift.
After meeting the rather cranky Dawnguard leader, Isran, he instructs you to meet with the Vigilants of Stendarr in Dimhollow Crypt, believing the vampires are searching for something. What or who are they searching for?
An Elder Scroll, and Serana a Vampire. As you dwell deeper into the crypt you encounter a sarcophagus containing a mysterious woman called Serana who has an Elder Scroll in her possession. She explains her father, Lord Harkon is a powerful vampire and she asks if you can escort her home, to Castle Volkihar.
Upon arrival at the creepy Castle Volkihar, you meet Lord Harkon, a powerful Vampire Lord and Serana's father. He thanks you for finding his daughter and more importantly the Elder Scroll and offers you a gift. What is this "gift"?
His blood and the ability to become a Vampire Lord. At this point you are literally given the choice of whether to join the vampires and aid Harkon in his insidious plans to blot out the sun or to refuse his "gift" and choose to help the Dawnguard instead. If you refuse his gift then you are teleported outside the castle, however if you choose to accept his gift then you awaken feeling rather... different.
If you chose to become a Vampire Lord, what is your first task?
To fill the Bloodstone Chalice from the Blood Spring in Redwater Den. Your first task is to fill the Bloodstone Chalice from the Blood Spring. However upon arrival at the Spring in Redwater Den you learn that two vampires from the Castle, Stalf and Salonia Caelia have been "ordered" by Harkon to kill anyone trying to steal from the Blood Spring. You later learn back at the Castle, that Harkon's position is a much coveted one and that one of his advisors must have sent the two vampires.
If you chose to become a member of the Dawnguard rather than a vampire what is your first task?
Recruit two new members into the ranks of the Dawnguard. You are to recruit Gunmar, an expert on the beasts that prowl Skyrim such as trolls, and Sorine Jurard who is studying the Dwemer and their craftmanship out in the Reach. Having recruited them both Isran now asks you to speak with him, concerning a vampire visitor...
No matter what side your're on, your next task is to locate someone who has the ability to read an Elder Scroll. Who are known across all of Tamirel to be the only ones capable of reading Elder Scrolls?
Moth Priests. It just so happens a Moth Priest has journeyed into Skyrim from the Imperial City and you are tasked by either Isran or Lord Harkon to intercept the Priest before the opposing faction gets to him. Either way you bring the Priest back to your faction's base where he reads the Scroll.
You now must recover two more Elder Scrolls. One is linked to the Main Quest but the other Elder Scroll is supposedly in the possession of Serana's mother, Valerica. To hide herself away from Lord Harkon, where did Valerica go?
She sealed herself away in the realm of Oblivion, the Soul Cairn. Having learnt more about the prophecy Lord Harkon wishes to bring about, Valerica took the Elder Scroll and hid it away with her in her secret study within Castle Volkihar. To protect the scroll further she opened a portal to the Soul Cairn, and sealed herself away within it. It's up to you and Serana to venture into the Soul Cairn and retrieve the scroll.
Having ventured into the dreary realm of Oblivion known as the Soul Cairn, you learn a little bit more about the lore of this place. Unlike other realms of Oblivion, the Soul Cairn isn't aligned to a Daedric Prince. Who does control the Soul Cairn instead?
The Ideal Masters. The Ideal Masters, are the insidious gem-like beings found within the Soul Cairn. Though these gems are thought to be the Ideal Masters, it isn't confirmed what form they actually take on. The Ideal Masters often make bargains with Necromancers, though they are known for their betrayal of these bargains later on, tricking the Necromancers.
After locating Valerica in the Soul Cairn you are tasked with bringing down the barrier that blocks you and Serana from her. Who must you defeat in order to bring down the barrier?
The Boneyard Keepers. After bringing down the barrier you must deal with Durnehviir, a unique dragon that prowls the Soul Cairn under the orders of the Ideal Masters. Upon his defeat you finally reclaim the Elder Scroll, Valerica has kept sealed away all these years and you may return to Tamriel.
You have the Elder Scrolls you need and now must perform the ritual in order to read them and learn of the location of what powerful and legendary artifact?
Auriel's Bow. Auriel's Bow, a powerful weapon once thought to have been wielded by Auriel himself (well obviously since it was named after him), is what the vampire's ultimately desire. Depending on what side you are on you embark on a quest to get the bow in order to end the tyranny of the sun, or get the bow to stop the vampires from getting their hands on it.
You now embark on a quest to recover the bow and you start in Darkfall Cave. You eventually encounter Knight-Paladin Gelebor who guards the first Wayshrine of Auriel. What is so unique about Gelebor?
He is a Snow Elf, one of the last remaining. You meet one of the last ever Snow Elves in Darkfall Cave where he explains to you either as a vampire or as a Dawnguard that to retrieve Auriel's Bow you must first deal with his treacherous brother, the Arch-Curate Vyrthur. Which entails you reaching the other Wayshrines of Auriel and filling the Initiate's Ewer in order to gain access to Auriel's Temple.
Now tasked with filling the Initiate's Ewer so you and Serana can confront the Arch-Curate Vyrthur, you must locate several Wayshrines scattered across what long since lost location?
The Forgotten Vale. The Forgotten Vale is a huge location where not only will you find Wayshrines, but legendary dragons that can swim and dive into the frozen lakes. It is also here where you confront Vyrthur, at the Temple of Auriel and learn the origins of the prophecy and obtain Auriel's Bow.
Having learned the full meaning of the prophecy, who must be sacrificed in order to complete it?
Serana. Serana, a "Daughter of Coldharbour" (meaning originated from Molag Bal who is thought to have first bestowed the disease of vampirism in Tamriel) must be sacrificed in order to complete the prophecy. Now it is up to you confront Lord Harkon, whether for the Vampires or for the Dawnguard.
You must now confront Lord Harkon in Castle Volkihar. Before he attempts to kill you and his own daughter, Serana, what does he demand?
You hand over Auriel's Bow. Whether you hand over the bow is up to you, either way the evil Vampire Lord attacks you. Upon his slaying you commended by either side, Vampires or Dawnguard and have successfully completed the "Dawnguard's" Main Questline!
Besides the Main Questline of "Dawnguard", what else are you able to do with the add-on?
Forge Dragonbone weapons. Dragonbone Weapons can be forged and are considerably more powerful than Daedric Weapons. There is also a High Elf woman who lives in the Ragged Flagon of Riften, who has the ability to change the characters appearance but not race or gender.
