Fun Trivia: H : Horse Breeds

Special Sub-Topic: Do You Know Clydesdales?

Clydesdales originated in the Clyde region of Scotland. Which of these horses did they replace for work?

Shire. The Clydesdale originated in Scotland, in the mid-18th century. It developed from a hardy breed. When Belgian draft and Flemish stallions were introduced, the breed started to gain bulk.

What is the name of the farm that the Budweiser Clydesdales are bred at?
Grant's Farm. At Grant's Farm where the Clydesdale is bred, there is a favorite mare (female horse over 5 years) named Rose. She is very popular and produces great hitch geldings (neutered males).

The Clydesdale was widely used throughout Lanarkshire for hauling____
Coal. Several early influential stallions to this breed were Glancer, Broomfield Champion, and his son Clyde.

Clydesdales are often used in driving competitions. What do they pull in Hawaii?
Wedding carts. Clydesdales are great driving horses. They have the most extreme action of any of the draft breeds.

What is the nickname of the Clydesdale?
The Gentle Giant. The Clydesdale gets its nickname because it is so gentle for its large size.

Bay is the most common color of Clydesdale. What other colors are there (yet not as common) of this breed?
Browns, Black, Chestnut, and Roan. Usually, a well-bred bay Clydesdale sells for a whole lot more than a well-bred roan, black, chestnut, or brown, unless they are from a very well known and respected breeder.

Where in the world do farmers use a six or even twelve horse (Clydesdale) hitch to plow their fields?
Argentina, zone of La Pampa. Take a six-horse hitch. Horses work as one but have individual jobs. The two in the front have to be slightly quicker in their step because they have a little farther to go on turns. The two in the middle have to be very nimble because on short turns, they have to avoid the pole. The two in the back have to be the biggest and the strongest, because during a turn, only one does practically all the work.

The Clydesdale is known to have the _____ action of all the draft breeds.
Most extreme. Clydesdales make great dressage horses because of this, and also because of their disposition (attitude), agility, willingness, and durability.

What is the style called when a Clydesdale has his mane done up in those small "pigtails"?
Aberdeen Roll. No one knows who first started braiding the Clydesdale's mane this way. Today, no Clydesdale enters the ring without it.

The Clydesdale and the ____ are said to be two different branches of the same breed.
Shire. This is thought because they are so alike in appearance, disposition (attitude), and what they are used for. The Clydesdale is just thought, in some places, to be a smaller version, somewhat like the Hackney and the Hackney Pony, but not exactly.
