Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the major difference between the first generation Firebird, and Camaro?

Answer: Drivetrain and Trim

The first generation cars were basically the same car, with different drivetrains, and trim. The tail lights were different, and both were available as convertibles.
2. What year did the "Trans Am" debut?

Answer: 1969

Pontiac needed a model to compete with the Camaro Z-28, and also to be able to race in the Trans Am Series.
3. What color was the 1969 "Trans Am"?

Answer: White with blue stripes

Until the mid seventies, the color options on the Trans Am were severely limited.
4. Which type of engine was available in the first generation Firebird, but not in the Camaro?

Answer: High performance 6 cylinder

The Firebird and Camaro, both had six and eight cylinder engines, but the Pontiac six cylinder was an overhead cam design, and available with a high performance option.
5. The overhead cam six cylinder engine from the first generation Firebird was not installed in the second-generation Firebird. Why?

Answer: It was too tall to fit under the hood

Being an overhead cam design,(camshaft located on top of the head, instead of inside the block) it was just too tall to fit in the redesigned second-generation Firebird. G.M. changed over to "corporate engine" use in all cars around a decade later.
6. How many 1969 Trans Am's were built?

Answer: 697

The 1969 Trans Am got a late start in the production year, also only 500 street models were required for the car to compete in the Trans Am racing series.
7. How many 1969 Trans Am's were convertibles ?

Answer: 8

You could not tell if a car was a convertible or not, by the V.I.N.,
so there is some debate as to exactly how many convertibles were made. Most sources agree on 8.
8. From a distance, how can you easily tell the difference between a 1967 Firebird, and a 1968 Firebird?

Answer: The 1967 has side window vents

Besides decoding the V.I.N. number, the easiest way to tell is the 1967 has vent windows, and the 1968 does not. The 1968 had chrome bumpers like the 1967.
9. What was the major difference between the Pontiac 350 cubic inch V8, and the Chevrolet 350 cubic inch V8?

Answer: The Pontiac was a "big block", and the Chevrolet a "small block"

Pretty much from the beginning, Chevy used a small block, and a big block, while Pontiac used one block regardless of the displacement.
10. The High performance 400 cubic inch engine in the Firebird/Trans Am had a governor installed by Pontiac. Why?

Answer: Power was limited to 10 H.P. per 100 lbs. of the car's weight

Pontiac installed the governor, because auto insurance guidelines, said horsepower should be limited to 10% of the car's weight.(Owners had no trouble removing it after delivery). The engine was originally designed for the G.T.O., which was a bigger, heavier car.
