Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Black-and-white shield with lion image in the middle

Answer: Peugeot

Peugeot was established in France in 1810. The company was first involved in the fabrication of steel and saws, and subsequently produced kitchenware, bicycles and hand tools. Three-wheeled steam-driven cars were Peugeot's first automobiles to be produced; however, only four of these cars were ever made because of their weight and the length of time they required to heat up.

The first Peugeot logo was designed in the 1850s by Emily Peugeot, although it wasn't first used in the car industry but in other Peugeot's products. The lion depicted in the Peugeot first logo is from a crest in the eastern region of France. In the 1920s, it was common practice to place manufacturing emblems on automobile radiator caps; however, the trend changed in the 1930s. The Peugeot logo in the photo was first used in 1996 and remained in place until 2021, when a new black-and-white logo depicting a roaring lion's head was introduced.
2. Resembles a black-and-white diamond

Answer: Renault

Renault is a French car manufacturer founded in 1899. The first time Renault used the diamond shape was in 1925. The black-and-white diamond shape with the name Renault in the centre remained in place until 1945. In 1946, the company was nationalised, and so the name "Renault" was used as the commercial brand.

In 1972, the name Renault disappeared from the logo, but the diamond shape was still in place. A new logo was created in the year 2000, which was a massive change.
3. Four interlocking circles

Answer: Audi

The four rings from Audi represent four different companies: Horch, DKW, and Wanderer. The four merged and became known as Auto Union AG. The order of the rings is as follows: the first ring is Audi, the second ring is DKW, the third is Horch, and the final ring represents Wanderer. All the companies were independent car manufacturers before they merged into one company.

The four rings were used for the first time when the Auto Union AG was formed. The new company was established on June 29, 1932.
4. Divided in half and resembles a silver "S"

Answer: Seat

In the world of car manufacturers, Seat hasn't been around for long. The first logo for Seat appeared in 1953 and was red and silver. The main body had the word Seat, and at the bottom of the logo was the word "Licencia Fiat." The wording was in silver.

This logo was used for the next seven years before it was changed in 1960. A few more designs were made over the next few years, but the biggest change was in 1972, when the logo was changed to an oblong shape and had a colour change to blue and yellow. Once again, the design was changed over the next few years until 2012, when the logo was now in the shape of the letter "S" and had gone back to a silver colour and the wording of Seat in red.

In 2017, the logo was all black but still retained the letter "S" as the main logo.
5. Bonnet mascot in the form of a leaping animal (until 2005)

Answer: Jaguar

The world-famous jaguar mascot was first introduced on the car bonnet in 1945. The mascot had a run of over 70 years before new rules and regulations came into force in 2005. The new rules were to protect pedestrians in the event of an accident. The new rules required bonnet mascots to either fold or bend in the event of a frontal collision.

The old mascot has now been replaced with the Roaring Jaguar, a round badge with a red background and a silver border. There is also a badge that is in silver, metallic grey, and black.
6. Letter H in silver, with red manufacturer's name on some variants

Answer: Honda

Soichiro Honda founded the company Honda Motor Co., Ltd. in 1948. The badge represents the initial letter of Sorichiro's surname. It was in the 1970s that Honda started to manufacture cars. The letter "H" has the definition of having reliability, quality, and innovation. The Honda logo is much the same today as it was when the company was founded.

If you look closely at the logo, you will notice the top part of the "H" is wider than the bottom, and the top is also deeper. From the year 2000, the letter "H" is in silver, and the wording of Honda is in a nice bright red. The wording for Honda uses serif-type letters. Honda has only had four different types of logos since the 1970s, but all have had the letter "H" in the design.
7. Circle with three-pointed star

Answer: Mercedes

Did you know the three-pointed star on the Mercedes represents land, sea, and air? Mercedes-Benz was founded in 1890 by the Daimler family. In 1926, Daimler and Benz merged into one big company.

The new Mercedes-Benz logo, a 3-pointed star enclosed in a circle, was born. The idea for the three-pointed star logo came from a postcard sent in 1872 by Gottlieb Daimler. On the postcard, the area where their home was marked by the three-pointed star. The family then decided to use the logo for their badge.
8. Oval badge in blue and silver with five small and one large stars

Answer: Subaru

Subaru took its name from a star cluster, "Pleiades." The word "Pleiades" translates to the Japanese word Subaru. Pleiades is also known as Taurus in many other parts of the world. All the logos for Subaru from 1953 have had an oval shape with the six stars represented in the design.

The deep blue background of the logo represents the sea and the sky. It has also been proposed that the six stars stand for six businesses that merged to become Fuji Heavy Industries, which subsequently became Subaru's parent corporation.
9. Triangular-shaped, red insignia comprising three sections

Answer: Mitsubishi

The origins of the Mitsubishi logo come from the joining of two crests from two families. The Yamacuhi Family Crest is "Mitsu-gashiwa," and the Iwisaki Family Crest is "Sangai-bishi." The crests from both families feature a three-pattern shape, with the Yamacuhi family depicting a three-blade type of propeller with three oak leaves in the design and the Iwisaki family crest showing three tiered water chestnuts. So when you arrange the names and crests of both families, you get the name of Mitsubishi and the design of the logo.
10. Resembles a military sleeve chevron

Answer: Citroën

The Citroën logo can be traced back to 1919, when André Citroën started to manufacture cars. The idea for the logo came from a herringbone-shaped gear wheel used in the milling industry. He bought the patent and started his own company making these gear wheels, which grew into a very successful company.

When Andre moved into the manufacture of cars, he used double chevrons for his logo. The basic design hasn't changed that much since its launch in 1919. Although there have been a few slight design changes in the colour and the outer shape of the logo, one thing has never changed, and that is the two double chevrons. Today, in 2024, the logo is more or less the same as the original logo dating back to 1919.
