"Five On a Hike Together" - Enid Blyton Quiz

This story begins at the boarding school attended by George and Anne. In fact the adventure is crammed into the half-term holiday. Julian's letter lets the girls know that they have been granted two days extra holiday because two boys have won a special scholarship.

One of the reasons that George did so little mixing with other children was the problem of her dog, Timmy. She refuses to be parted from her dog and she only agrees to go away to boarding school when Anne tells her about the special rule at her school.

George and Dick, Julian and Anne all like each other but George's determination to be treated as a boy ensures that any gestures of affection and greeting must be kept to what she will tolerate. This means that Dick slaps her on the back like he would do with one of his classmates or team mates at school.

The October holiday means that the Five have to be particularly careful about the weather. Most of their adventures seem to take place during the summer holidays when there are more days available and when they camp out or go off in a caravan.

Timmy was over enthusiastic in his chasing of rabbits and went down a hole that was much too small for him. The only one small enough to go in after him was Anne. All the others had to combine to drag both Anne and Timmy out of the little tunnel. Somehow Timmy damaged himself in the process. George is so worried she even partly blames Anne for holding him so tight.

Answer: They hope to find a Mr. Gaston who knows about animal injuries.

It is Timmy's injury that causes Julian to decide that they must change their plans and separate into two parties. Mr. Gaston keeps horses but a woman in the village tells them that he will be able to treat Timmy as well. Dick and Anne are heading for Blue Pond Farmhouse where they have arranged to spend the night.

At first Dick believes someone has got a message for him but the message is really for "Dirty Dick", the son of Mrs. Taggart who lives at the farm where Dick and Anne had stayed.

In the old days George would have taken offense at this kind of joke about her beloved dog. But her friendship with her cousins means that her character has changed and Enid Blyton says, "They all laughed, George especially."

Answer: That a prisoner had escaped from the prison.

The night-time bell-ringing is another one of the clever ways in which Enid Blyton can build up the exciting atmosphere of her story. The first time it happens it is inexplicable but later on the children know that an escaped prisoner is on the run. It is bit reminiscent of the escape of the convict in Dickens' "Great Expectations" where guns are fired to signal that two convicts have escaped from the hulks.

It is Anne who realises that her brother was not the intended recipient of the odd message. She remembers that Mrs. Taggart's son was called Dick and makes the link in her mind before she explains it to the others. They eventually work out that the man at the window must have been the escaped convict.

Answer: He tears it into four pieces and throws it away.

The policeman is not interested in the children's story because the escaped convict has been caught.He regards the children as both interfering and cheeky and becomes furious with them. After he tears up the message Dick collects the pieces and reminds the man about the laws connected with scattering litter.

Answer: It had been burned down and left in ruins.

The burned out house lies near to Gloomy Water and the children know at once that they are on the trail of what is behind the mystery.

Answer: Merry Meg

The Saucy Jane is the boat that has been sunk in the middle of the lake. It is the one containing the treasure. The Merry Meg is the only one of the remaining boats in the boathouse that is at all sea-worthy. The Famous Five don't use a boat - they use a raft.

Answer: Windmill

"Windmill" is the only invented name amongst the three real ones that Enid Blyton supplies. The fourth landmark is "Tock Hill" and only when all four landmarks can be seen at once can the raft be sure of being in the right place. This sort of inventiveness in her plots is what made Enid Blyton's stories so popular.

It is a mystery that the young reader finds straightforward but interesting to solve.

The children have found the jewellery in the waterproof sack on board the sunken Saucy Jane. They pack the jewels in their kit-bags and set off for the police station. The villains spot the boxes and set off in pursuit. However, very soon they find themselves sinking into the marsh.
