A beautiful area of County Galway is known for its breathtaking scenery and unique landscape. What is the name of this western region?

Connemara. Connemara is, in my opinion, the most beautiful place in Ireland. It is a wild, mountainous region with many lakes. Animals graze freely, and you are likely to come across some stray sheep on your journeys! There are many small, old-style Irish villages and it is a great place to come if you want to relax! Most people here speak Irish and it is known as a Gaeltacht area.

Galway City was once ruled by tribes. How many tribes were there?

14. In ancient times, the 14 tribes ruled Galway, and it is known as "The City of the Tribes". As there are 14 roundabouts in the city, each roundabout is named after a Tribe! To name a few of the tribes: Joyce, Lynch, Bodkin, Kirwan, and Blake.

Each year, in the town of Ballinasloe, a well-known event takes place. Can you name it?

Ballinasloe Horse Fair. The Horse Fair is well-known all around Ireland, and people come from all around Ireland to buy or sell horses, or just to have a fun day out.

Tuam, in North Galway, is well-known for its love of football. Can you name the school in Tuam which is known far and wide for its success in Gaelic football and its ability to produce excellent players?

St. Jarlath's College. St. Jarlath's College has won the Hogan Cup more times than any other school in Ireland. In any year, the Galway Football team will have several players who have gone to school in Jarlath's.

What is the name of the road that runs from Tuam to Galway, a road which was immortalised in a song by the Saw Doctors, the famous Tuam band?

N17. The Saw Doctors are a band known by everyone in Galway. Their song about the N17 is probably the most well-known. It is all about emigration. The man in the song moves away to America but never forgets his home town. "I wish I was on that N17, stone walls and the grass is green, travelling with just my thoughts and dreams."

What is the name of the islands off Galway Bay, visited by many tourists each year?

Aran Islands. There are three Aran Islands: Inis Mór, Inis Meáin and Inis Óirr (In English meaning Big Island, Middle Island and South Island). Inishmór, the largest, is visited most often. Dún Aengus is the main attraction on this island. It is an ancient hillfort built high on top of a cliff. There are great views of the Atlantic Ocean from this point.

What is the name of both the river that runs through Galway city and the lake in County Galway?

Corrib. Lough Corrib is the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland. It is a great fishing and angling area. People can go on cruises around the lake, and it is a very beautiful spot.

A quiz about Galway would not be complete without some GAA trivia. In what years did the Galway football team win the All-Ireland Final three years in a row?

1964 - 1966. Gaelic Football is a great passion for many people of Galway, and especially in the North of the county. After the 3-in-a-row in the Sixties, Galway did not win the All-Ireland for a long time. In 1998, captain Ray Silke, along with star players Michael Donnellan and Padraig Joyce, led Galway to their first All-Ireland in 32 years. And what a day it was!

Hurling is also very popular in Galway. A brilliant player on the Galway Hurling Team is Eugene Cloonan. Can you name the club he plays with?

Athenry. Cloonan usually plays in a number 14 jersey, and is one of the best hurlers in the country. Goalkeepers beware of his sharp shooting!

What are the colours of the Galway flag?

Maroon and white. Go to the Connaught Final and these colours will be seen everywhere, most likely along with the green and red of Mayo, our long-lasting rivals.
