What was Pie infected with in the beginning of the novel?

A uredo. The Autarch attempted to trick Pie 'oh' pah into thinking he was Gentle. When the real Gentle convinced him of the truth, the Autarch reached close to his eye and released a powerful spell. It was a uredo, a smoky ball flung right at Pie, whose attacker escaped in the smoke. Gentle examined the wound and saw that the uredo left a black stain on his flesh with yellow surrounding it. Pie began to literally fade away as Gentle searched for a way to cure the mystif. However, the spell successfully killed it.

Which name did Gentle never go by in his entire life?

Autarch. John Furie Zacharias, the proper name Gentle had at the beginning of the story, was just one of several identities he had. He was over 200 years old and had been through many lives. Some people called him Furie, Zach, Zacho, and Mr. Zee, and he liked to call himself Gentle. Near the beginning of the second part, he learned he was Sartori, the famous Maestro everyone had assumed was dead. His brother was the Autarch.

What became of the Tabula Rasa?

They were all killed. The Tabula Rasa existed to keep magic out of the Fifth Dominion. They took any books related to other Dominions and eliminated any magical people they found. Dowd was responsible for killing his master Oscar Godolphin. Bloxham and every other member of the Tabula Rasa was killed. Gentle reunited with Sartori in the Tabula's tower and they battled. Near the beginning of the novel Gentle's brother went by Autarch but later on he was called Sartori.

Who was responsible for sabotaging the original Reconciliation?

Autarch. Years before the story took place, Gentle and Godolphin fought over one woman, Jude. So Gentle duplicated her and accidentally cloned himself as well, creating the Autarch. Gentle failed his first Reconciliation because his brother sabotaged his efforts. He tricked the young Lucius Cobbitt into thinking the stones needed for the event were flawed and had him exchange them. Many people died as a result.

Who acted as a guardian angel to Gentle?

Clem and Taylor. Clem found Gentle homeless and horribly beaten. He helped him return to his home. Taylor had died previously and his companion, Clem, claimed to have seen and spoken with him, even after his passing. Eventually Tay asked Clem to allow him inside and the two of them watched over Gentle, saying they were his guardian angels.

What secret was revealed about Celestine?

She was Gentle's mother. Dowd was a part of kidnapping Celestine hundreds of years ago; she was impregnated by Hapexamendios, and Gentle was born. She was then taken back into the Fifth Dominion, Earth, and kept captive under the Tabula Rasa's tower. When Jude helped free Celestine from her prison, she requested to see Sartori and soon revealed he was her son.

When was the cut-off point to do another Reconciliation?

Mid-summer. When Gentle got his memories back and realized he was Sartori, he went back to the Fifth Dominion to attempt it again. He had to do it by mid-summer or fail yet again. However, when Gentle returned to the original Reconciliation location, the Autarch had a trap waiting. An apelike creature named Little Ease forcefully gave back all of the Maestro's memories, completely confusing him and delaying the new Reconciliation, which could be attempted only every 100 years.

What helped Gentle control his damaged mind?

Painting. After Little Ease's attack, Gentle could barely think straight because his mind was flooded with 200 years of forgotten memories. He lived on the streets and was beaten badly. But when he saw a painting done by a young man named Monday, he asked for paints and drew a large picture of several scenes during his stay in the other Dominions. Living as John Furie Zacharias, Gentle was a painter, and the work helped him immensely. Monday became a fiercely loyal companion.

What was the specific name of the creatures Sartori brought with him to the Reconciliation?

Gek-a-gek. Sartori used several types of magic in the story. He used a uredo from his eye to kill Pie; he used an Oviate to delay Gentle; he used creatures called Peripeteria to animate dead limbs to do his bidding; and he used the gek-a-gek to threaten every one of Gentle's companions. The creatures from the In Ovo killed Little Ease, who had joined Gentle. The gek-a-gek had translucent skin, were sleek and strong, and had sharp paws the size of a man's head.

Which character did not die?

Clem. Godolphin sustained injuries when Dowd forcefully took his place taking Jude to the city of Yzordderrex. But he was eventually killed by Dowd when he returned to the Fifth Dominion. Dowd was initially injured sneaking into Yzordderrex, and was also hurt after Quasoir threw him into an immense pit. However, after battling with Celestine, Dowd finally crumbled to the ground and died, his dangerous mites exiting his mouth and nose. Quaisoir perished when, in a drug-induced state of relaxation, the Pivot broke apart and crushed her. Sartori, Celestine, and Hapexamendios all died in the same fire. Clem survived and, along with Monday and Chicka Jackeen, carried out Gentle's will.

Godolphin. After his first try was sabotaged, Gentle told Lucius to study well and learn from his master's mistakes. Lucius grew into a very powerful Maestro and named himself Chicka Jackeen and loyally stood for the First Dominion. Tick Raw represented in the Mount of Lipper Bayak in the Fourth, Scopique represented Kwem in the Third Dominion, and Athanasius stood for Yzordderrex in the Second Dominion. All of the Maestros gathered together was named the Synod.

Which Goddess was not present when Jude visited them?

Celestine. Jude asked Gentle to wait for his attempt at the Reconciliation and went to the Retreat. She went into Yzordderrex because she doubted the real purpose of the religious event. While in the city, she felt the draw of the Goddesses, who were represented by moving rivers all throughout. She allowed herself to be taken to them. She felt such love and kindness from Uma Umagammagi, who resembled a very old woman. Jokalaylau, Goddess of the High Snows, and Tishalullé, the Goddess who lived in the Cradle, were also present. They told Jude to allow Gentle to carry out his effort for his Reconciliation.

What food did Jude and Hoi-Polloi find in the New Yzordderrex?

Fish and fruit. After Hapexamendios died, the Goddesses took over the city of Yzzordderrex completely, filling it with water and seeds. The city was transformed into a beautiful green paradise, its trees overflowing with delicious fruit and its water filled with plentiful fish. Even Mai-Ké, which was once a dusty, dead land, came to life and fed its inhabitants.

Jude did the wrong thing by stopping Gentle's Reconciliation.

False. Jude did whatever it took to prevent the Reconciliation. She stood in front of the meditating Maestro and harassed him until he was awakened. It took some time, but Gentle eventually realized she was correct and his father Hapexamendios was indeed evil. Celestine had him meet the Unbeheld and distract him, and eventually they tricked the God into sending a blast of fire across the Dominions. It killed Celestine and Sartori, but Hapexamendios failed to see a critical fact: the Imajica was a circle. The fire circled around and the Unbeheld was killed as well.

What was the final act Gentle performed?

He made a map. After Pie died, Gentle was heartbroken and knew he had to do his duty to send his soul-mate into heaven. In the first book, Pie took Gentle around much of the other Dominions. Pie's goal was to help him regain his memory and attempt another Reconciliation. If the Dominions were reconciled, the lost spirits roaming would be free to enter into heaven. During that trip, Gentle thought about making a map of the other Dominions because one didn't exist. His final act was to travel the Dominions again and make the best map he could. The Erasure was cleansed and it was revealed that Hapexamendios was hiding the doorway into heaven. When Gentle was finished with his work, Pie came to him and the two of them left together.
