Sweet Briar College. Janet began college at Sweet Briar in rural Virginia. She had originally planned to attend Vassar, but changed her mind. While at Sweet Briar many people asked her if she was related to Robert E. Lee and Janet answered yes! After a year at Sweet Briar Janet went back to New York and studied for some time at Barnard College in Manhattan. Janet did not finish college.

Whenever all the family was at Hammersmith Farm, Janet would let the children of her own daughters ride her horse, but she would not let Hughdie's children's children ride. Janet also wanted one of her children or step-children to name one of their daughters after her. Hughdie's son, Yusha, named his daughter after his mother, Maya, and Janet could not stand to call her by name. She simply refered to her as "that little girl". Both Jackie and Hughdie agreed she had gone to far with all the unfairness.
