Fun Trivia: M : Morissette, Alanis

Special Sub-Topic: "Jagged Little Pill"

"There's an apprehensive naked trembling little boy with his head in his hands. There's an underestimated and impatient little girl raising her hand."

Wake Up. This, I believe, is Alanis' message to girls that are trapped in relationships with guys who do not treat them right or appreciate them.

"Do I wear you out? You must wonder why I'm relentless and all strung out. I'm consumed by the chill of solitary."
All I Really Want. What do we all want? Is it better to be lonely than heartbroken? Do you think that we need someone to complete us? I can only hypothesize, but I think that Alanis felt so jaded that she needed to release all of her anger to realize that she had to love herself first.

"You treat me like I'm a princess. I'm not used to liking that. You ask me how my day was."
Head Over Feet. Sometimes people get used to being treated poorly in relationships and seek it out. It is hard to get used to being appreciated. This is where the statement "Nice guys finish last" comes from.

"I'll live through you. I'll make you what I never was. If you're the best, than maybe so am I."
Perfect. Too many parents live vicariously through their kids. It is hard to measure up to your parents' expectations, and this can leave many emotional scars on children into adulthood.

"Wear it out (the way a three-year-old would do). Melt it down (you're gonna have to eventually anyway). The fire trucks are coming up around the bend."
You Learn. The best education is experience! Many humans need to hit rock bottom before they learn certain lessons. Some people never learn from their mistakes.

"You seem quite well, things look peaceful. I'm not quite as well, I thought you should know."
You Oughta Know. I am banking on the fact that most people would know this one. This was her first release and was a huge smash hit.

"Hello Mr. Man. You didn't think I'd come back. You didn't think I'd show up with my army and this ammunition on my back."
Right Through You. This song is based on the motive of revenge. I think that when all is said and done, the people that brought you pain and misery should be looked at with gratitude if you are now a better person because of knowing what to avoid. To feel joy at the expense of another, even if they have slighted you is certainly "human", but not advantageous.

"You're the sweet crusader and you're on your way. You're the last great innocent and that's why I love you"
Mary Jane. Sometimes it's okay to be selfish. I think that is what Alanis was getting at in this song. It is great to be nice, but some people take that as an invitation to walk on you. There has to be a line drawn, but sticking to who you are and holding to your principles is admirable. I received a correction note from Jwam23 that said that this song is really about a friend of hers that overdosed on crack cocaine. It very well could be as I am only interpreting the songs as I read them. :)

"Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly. He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye"
Ironic. If I stated any more, this would be a guarantee. It is a pretty obvious one anyway.

"What I learned, I rejected, but I believe again. I will suffer the consequence of this inquisition"
Forgiven. This is one of my favorite songs by Alanis. She discusses being brought up with organized religion and not having a choice in whom she believed in.
