Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which island is more commonly referred to as Put-in-Bay?

Answer: South Bass Island

Put-in-Bay is the village located on South Bass Island. It is the most famous of the Lake Erie Islands, it has the most tourism because of the many attractions on this particular island.
2. Of what are the islands generally made up?

Answer: Limestone and Dolomite

Most all of the caves on the islands are limestone caves. However, there is one that is not like the others. Crystal Cave, on South Bass Island/Put-in-Bay, is very unique as it is not actually a cave but a giant geode referred to as a cave. It is actually the largest geode in the world.
3. Of these islands, which is the smallest?

Answer: Ballast Island

North Bass is the largest of these choices. Rattlesnake and Sugar Islands are both relatively small islands, but Ballast is the smallest.
4. Which of these islands is not in the United States, instead is on the other side of the Canadian border?

Answer: Middle Island

Middle Island, not to be confused with Middle Bass Island, is in Canada, along with Pelee Island. Mouse Island is very close to the Ohio mainland, unlike Starve Island and Kelleys Island. Starve is near the Bass Islands.
5. Which island does not have anything on it at all?

Answer: Starve Island

Starve is one of the smallest Lake Erie Islands, only two acres. It is about a mile from South Bass, and it is very visable, it looks like a pile of bright white rocks. It serves as a very popular hangout for seagulls and other lake birds.
6. About how many islands are there in Lake Erie?

Answer: About 20

The islands were formed with the melting of the glaciers at the end of the Ice Age. Some of the islands are South, Middle, and North Bass Islands, Kelleys Island, Pelee Island, Middle Island, East, Middle, and West Sister Islands, Hen Island, Sugar Island, Green Island, Rattlesnake Island, Gibraltar Island, Ballast Island, Mouse Island, Starve Island, Johnson's Island, and Turtle Island.
7. Which of these islands are not within a mile of South Bass Island?

Answer: Mouse Island

Green Island is just off the west coast of South Bass. Ballast is on the complete opposite end of South Bass just off the end of East Point, and Gibraltar sits right across the Put-in-Bay harbor. Mouse Island is some miles away from South Bass, it's very close to the Ohio mainland.
8. Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial is on which island?

Answer: South Bass Island

In the War of 1812, Master Commandant Oliver Hazard Perry defeated the British fleet in Put-in-Bay harbor in the Battle of Lake Erie. In honour of his victory, a 352-foot Greek Doric Column was erected on South Bass Island. Originally, the monument was going to be placed on Gibraltar Island, but eventually in 1912-1915 Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial was built on South Bass Island/Put-in-Bay, Ohio.
9. The Lake Erie Islands are famous spots for all but one of the following. Which of these is not something that has ever been popular on the islands?

Answer: Copper Mining

All of the Lake Erie islands are known for their caves and their grapes. For years, there were hundrends of acres of grape vineyards and wineries on many of the islands, including South Bass, Middle Bass, Kelleys and Pelee. The caves also played a big part in island history, there are limestone caves on almost every island in Lake Erie.

In the early 1800s, when settlers first came to the islands, South Bass was used for sheep raising. Copper mining has never been popular on the islands.
10. Which of the Lake Erie Islands is largest by area?

Answer: Pelee Island

Pelee is larger than the size of Kelleys and South Bass combined, at 36 square miles. Kelleys Island is the largest of the American islands. North Bass is not very big, but it isn't as small as the little islands spattered around in the lake.
