Special Sub-Topic: Life & Times in 50 B.C. Corsica
Immigration to Corsica was very tight - there were fortified Roman camps all round the coast to prevent any illegal immigrants entering the country - any infiltration will be promptly reported to the Praetor, who resided in the capital Agylla. Who was the Roman Praetor to Corsica in 50 B.C?
Perfidius. Perfidius was an extremely cruel and greedy man who levied huge taxes on the people so that he could return with the booty to Caesar when the formers reign in Corsica was over.
An excerpt from the Corsican Roman Times (dated 50 B.C) read like this, 'A very well organized attack on one of the Corsican villages yielded massive gains for the Roman army - none more than the capture of the tyrant and despotic rebel who, over the years, had looted a significant amount of the tribute (that should have gone to Most Honorable Caesar). His punishment has been prompt - he has been exiled from the country for ever.' What was the name of this rebel?
Boneywasawarriorwayayix. Boneywasawarriorwayayix was rescued from the Roman camp of Toturum when Asterix and Co raided it as part of the anniversary celebrations of the Gauls victory at Gergovia.
Visitors to Corsica were requested to avoid this jungle; apart from the fact that one got lost in this area pretty fast; it was also very dangerous because of a high concentration of Corsican rebels who had taken refuge in these woods (when Romans come searching for them). What were these woods better known?
Maquis. Maquis was also the place where Rigatonix (Olabelamargaritix's cousin) was hiding.
A notice from the Classified sections of the Roman Military News, 'We Want You! Come join us, O Corsicans. Knowledge of rebel towns and leaders will result in instant selection.' Another article in the same newspaper lamented on the lack of participation by Corsicans in the Roman military, '....only one soldier in the Roman army posted in Corsica is from Corsica.' What was the name of this soldier?
Salamix. He was asked by the Roman Praetor to help him in the loading of the ships so that the latter could escape the Corsicans and also avoid answering his own troops.
Corsica (in 50 B.C) was divided into a number (a very big number, to be precise) of clans, each led by its own leader. Who amongst the following was NOT a clan leader of the Corsicans?
Muttoncurrix. Some of the other clan leaders include Spaghettix, Tagliatellix, Cannellonix and Semolinagnocchix. After coming back from his exile, Boneywasawarriorwayayix meets them in a cave next to Maquis.
A top secret report to the Praetor was leaked to the newspaper, 'It is confirmed that the rebel leader whom you had exiled from this country has come back to this country along with two Gauls and a dog. It is highly advisable to send a crack team of soldiers to capture this man immediately.' Who was made the leader in charge of the troops?
Courtingdisastus. Courtingdisastus was an over enthusiastic new recruit to the Roman camps in Corsica - he was the first to sight Boneywasawarriorwayayix and the other men from the pirate ship. He reported this to the Praetor who rewarded him by making the leader of the patrol selected to capture the rebel.
Corsican rebels used a very advanced and complicated means of communicating Roman presence. Which of the following was NOT a step (or a link) in this complicated process?
Smoke Signals. To inform the villagers about a Roman patrol advancing towards their villager, the following steps were used: first a villager pulled the tail of a donkey which started braying; on getting this signal, a kid on top of the tree threw fruits at a pig nearby, which in turn grunted. This message was received by the villager fishing, who in turn informed the villagers.
After a short battle with the Praetor, the Corsicans were victorious. However in some archives, a rivalry between the chief rebel and another leader is mentioned vaguely. It is also mentioned that this arose primarily due to misunderstandings from both parts. However this feud didn't turn out to be disastrous as an agreement was reached with the help of a Gaul called Asterix. What was the name of this 'other leader'?
Olabelamargaritix. Boneywasawarriorwayayix suspected that Olabelamargaritix had 'sold' him to the Romans - hence the feud. Of course, they were other matters too - like the business of a great-grandfather who didn't pay a donkey...Etc.
'Deep sea searches were conducted around the Corsican coastline to obtain information about the naval advancements of the Corsicans at that time. It is of particular interest to note the discovery of a blown up pirate ship near the coastline. The exact cause of the 'blow up' could not be ascertained despite extensive research.' What was the actual cause of the ship to blow up?
Cheese. Cheese or Corsican Cheese (to be precise) was the explosive material which ignited the ship. In the words of Boneywasawarriorwayayix, 'Corsican Cheese has a delicate aroma calling to mind Thyme and Almond trees, Fig trees, Chestnut trees. Also hints of Tarragon, Pines, Lavender, Rosemary....'
It was widely rumoured that the Praetor during the battle (in 50 B.C) had stacked his wealth and booty in a private ship and was planning to leave the country in secret. However during the war, the ship was sunk at the harbour itself. This encouraged a lot of treasure hunters to search this area extensively. However these treasure hunters haven't been successful till now. What were the things that were loaded on that ship in 50 B.C by the Praetor's men?
One Amphora. The men had only one night to transfer the booty from the warehouse to the ship. However all they ever transferred was one amphora.
