Special Sub-Topic: Mexican Food in the United States


This is a flat Mexican bread, made from flour or corn, used to make many Mexican dishes.

    Tortilla. The best tortillas (hard to get!) are handmade.

A filling of meat, beans or other ingredients, wrapped in a large, soft flour tortilla.
    Burrito. Burritos can be made of many things, from beans to scallops.

A spicy brown sauce made from many ingredients, including chile, bread crumbs, and chocolate.
    Mole. There are many different kinds of mole.

A flour (sometimes corn) tortilla folded in half and filled with melted cheese.
    Quesadilla. The name means "little cheesy one."

Soft corn tortillas rolled around a filling of meat or cheese and baked with a special sauce.
    Enchiladas. Enchilada sauce is usually not extremely spicy, but is based on dried chiles.

Corn tortilla chips covered with melted cheese.
    Nachos. The cheese may be real cheese or a processed sauce.

A deep-fried pastry stick, rolled in sugar and served hot.
    Churro. Churros can be bought from mobile carts in some areas.

A cold drink made from rice and almonds.
    Horchata. Horchata sold in restaurants is likely to be composed more of chemicals than real rice and almonds!

Corn tortillas rolled tightly around a meat or potato filling and deep-fried. Also called rolled tacos.
    Taquitos. "Taquito" means "little taco."

A soup containing tripe.
    Menudo. Many restaurants serve menudo on specific days, often Fridays.
