I was a native Virginian, and before I raced stock cars I was an AMA champion. I was known as the clown prince of racing. Who am I?

    Joe Weatherly. Joe Weatherly was the 1962 and 1963 Grand National champion. He was killed in a wreck in the 1964 Riverside 500.

To get my first Grand National (now Winston Cup) car in 1959, I waited until the bank closed on Friday and wrote a check for $2,000. Knowing the check was no good, I had to win the two races that were held that weekend. I managed to win both races with some relief help, and was at the bank when they opened Monday morning with the money to cover the check. I'm am who?
    Ned Jarrett. These were the first two of Ned Jarrett's fifty wins. He ws also a two-time champion, and as you know he is the father of Dale Jarrett.

Junior Johnson won the 1960 Daytona 500 driving a 1959 Chevrolet, sponsored by the Daytona Beach Kennel Club, built by me. Who am I?
    Ray Fox. Ray Fox built the car that Junior drove in just seven days.

I'm another native of Virginia, and although I won many short track races, I won only one Grand National (Winston Cup) race. I was the driver of car #34. Who am I?
    Wendell Scott. Wendell was one of the struggling independents on the Grand National circuit for many years. The one time he did manage to win, he had to protest the finish because they gave the win to another driver. After a re-check of the scoring cards it was discovered that Wendell was two laps ahead of everyone else.

Bill France presented me a Rolex watch with, "Quitters never win and winners never quit", engraved on it for driving in the 1969 Talladega 500. I am who?
    Bobby Isaac. Bobby Isaac was the only top driver not to boycott the inaugural Talladega 500, and to show his appreciation, France had the watch engraved for him. All the other top drivers left because the tires could not stand up to the speeds they were running.

In 1947, Bill France called a group of promoters and drivers together for a meeting. This was the birth of Nascar. Where was the meeting held in Daytona Beach?
    Streamline Hotel. When they voted for a name for this new racing organization, the name Nascar came in second because some of those in attendance thought it sounded too much like Nash car. However, after they broke for lunch it was discovered there was already a stock car group using the name that won, so Nascar was then adopted as the name.

I won the final race ran on the beach in Daytona in 1958, in a car prepared by Smokey Yunick. Who am I?
    Paul Goldsmith. Goldsmith had built up a huge lead in the race. On the last lap, he was blinded by salt water spray and missed the north turn. When he realized what had happened, he spun the car around and roared back down the beach jumping over the turn just in front of Curtis Turner, and won the race by a car length.

While attending the 1955 beach race as a spectator, I saw one of the Keikhaefer Chryslers go roaring down the beach, and made the comment that I could win the race if I had that car. I was overheard and I did end up driving that Chrysler to a second place finish, but was declared the winner after the first place car was disqualified. Who am I?
    Tim Flock. Tim Flock was declared the winner after Fireball Roberts was disqualified. Ironically, Tim had won the race the year before and was then disqualified.

I won the Daytona 500 driving for the Wood Brothers. I got the ride because I pulled their regular driver from the burning wreck of a sports car. I was also awarded the Carnegie Medal for my act of heroism. I'm Tiny Lund. The driver that I saved was who?
    Marvin Panch. Tiny won the 1963 Daytona 500 thanks to the fast pit work the Wood Brothers came to be known for. Not only was it their fast pit work, but they ran the entire 500 miles on one set of tires.

I'm a native of Elmhurst, Illinois. I was known as Golden Boy. Who am I?
    Fred Lorenzen. Fred Lorenzen was the driver of the #28 Ford, fielded by the Holman-Moody team. He won the 1965 Daytona 500.
