    Mexico. Mexico City is built the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the Aztec capital. When the Spaniard Hernando Cortes saw this island city, he called it 'the most beautiful city in the world'.

This country contains a large lake which has the same name as the country. Its capital is on another lake.
    Nicaragua. Nicaragua's capital, Managua, is on Lake Managua.

This country, whose highest mountain is Pico Duarte, occupies the eastern half of the island of Hispaniola.
    Dominican Republic. Pico Duarte is also the highest point on the Caribbean islands, at 10417 feet.

This self-governing territory in the Lesser Antilles once contained the islands of Curacao and Bonaire.
    Netherlands Antilles. This territory's capital was Willemstad, on Curacao. The Netherlands Antilles was dissolved in 2010.

This country contains the second-largest coral reef in the world and an extensive cave system, Chiquibil. It also is the site of many Mayan ruins.
    Belize. Belize is the only Central American country where English is the official language.

This country's capital, a popular vacation spot, is on the island of New Providence.
    Bahamas.

In 1902 the volcano Mont Pelee erupted and wiped out this territory's capital.
    Martinique. Only one person in the former capital, St. Pierre, survived the eruption. Now Martinique's capital is Fort de France.

This country, once called Darien, contains a port named after Christopher Columbus and the Golfos(Gulf) de los Mosquitos.
    Panama. The port is Colon, Columbus's last name in Spanish.

This British territory is located south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica.
    Cayman Islands. The Cayman Islands' capital is George Town.

This is a small French territory south of Newfoundland.
    St. Pierre and Miquelon. The territory is made up of two islands, one of which is called Saint Pierre and the other Miquelon. This territory's area is 93 square miles and its population is 7,000 people.
