Trafalgar was fought off the coast of Spain and ranks as one of the world's greatest naval victories. It was during this battle that a sharpshooter ended the life of one of Britain's greatest naval heroes, Horatio Nelson.

Answer: Vice-Admiral Collingwood

Collingwood commanded the squadron blockading Cadiz in 1805. This squadron contained three ships-of-the-line, a frigate and a bomb vessel. In August 1805 he was fifty-seven.

Answer: Vice-Admiral Villeneuve

Villeneuve had been with the French fleet at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. After escaping from the Nile his fellow officers regarded him with suspicion. He always seemed haunted by the spectre of Nelson.

Answer: White, red gun ports

Her paint scheme created the effect of four bold scarlet stripes down her flanks. It also made her stand out even more than she already did. At her prow was a group of figures representing the Holy Trinity.

Aigle surrendered at about 3.30pm after her Captain saw three British ships approaching. She had been badly damaged during her duel with HMS Bellerophon and was boarded by men from HMS Defiance.
