It caused an outrage, and the American was to win the gold in a manner he would not have liked. Young Yang had to settle for bronze whilst his compatriot Eun Dae Kim landed silver.

    Germany & Australia. In the men's event, Australia defeated the Dutch (Holland) whilst in the women's event, Germany also beat the unlucky Dutch. Both finals were hard fought and very closely matched.

In Rowing, there were 14 golds won by 11 different nations. Which two nations scooped more than one each?
    Romania & Germany. The Romania women's crews won three of the six medals available for women, whilst the German women won two of the other three. Only New Zealand women landed one. In the men's however, the eight races were won by eight nations, Great Britain, Poland, Russia, Australia, France, Denmark, Norway, and USA.

Which two Athletes secured historic track doubles, by winning both events they competed in?
    Kelly Holmes & Hicham El Guerrouj. Holmes won gold in both the women's 1500m and 800m, whilst El Guerrouj triumphed in the mens 5000m and 1500m. Wariner won the men's 400m, and also the mens 4x400m, but as an individual he only won one event. Campbell won the women's 200m whilst taking the bronze in the 100m. Gatlin won the mens 100m but took bronze in the 200m. Williams-Darling won the 400m for women. Phillips secured the Long Jump title whilst Cumba won the shot put in the women's version.

Of the nine Athletics sprint events for men the USA won how many?
    8. Amazingly the Americans scored 8 out of 9. However, amazingly the one event they were hot favourites to win saw Great Britain win the 4 x 100m crown in the closest of finishes. In contrast the American women suffered miserably winning just two of the sprint events and those being over 400m relay and 100m hurdles.

In the Canoe/Kayak C2 class which two brothers won gold?
    Pavol and Peter Hochschorner. Slovakian brothers Pavol and Peter Hochschorner won gold ahead of Germany's Marcus Becker and Stefan Henze in silver whilst Jaroslav Volf and Onjrej Stepanek took bronze.

What event did Norweigan Gunn-Rita Dahle win gold in?
    Womens Mountain Biking. Miss Dahle took gold in the womens Mountain biking ahead of Marie-Helene Premont of Canada and Sabine Spitz of Germany.

Which nation won both team golds in the Archery?
    South Korea. The Koreans dominated the Archery with gold in both team events in the womens Lee Sung Jin, Park Sung Hyun, and Yun Mi Jin were victorious whilst in the mens Im Dong Hyun, Jang Yong Ho, and Park Kyung Mo came out on top. In the individual event Korea took the ladies title with Park Sung Hyun, however, Italian Marco Galiazzo suprised the games with gold in the mens.

The USA finished top of the medals table with 103 medals (35 G, 39 S, 29 B). However despite winning just 11 less in the medals total Russia were pipped to second place by China. What was the overall totals for both these nations in golds?
    China 32 Russia 27. Amazingly China won just 63 medals to 92 from Russia. The gold tally was 32-27 to China but 27-17 in silver to Russia and a whopping 38-14 in bronze to Russia.

How many nations took at least one gold medal home from the Olympics?
    54. Ranging from the USA with 35 down to 18 nations on one.

How many nations took at least one medal of any colour home from the Olympics?
    71. Countries ranging from Syria to Hong Kong had heros.

How many European nations finished in the top ten on the final medals table?
    Five. In order of gold medals Russia (27), Germany (14), France (11), Italy (10) and Great Britain(9)

Outside of the top ten nations which other country won more than 10 silvers in the Olympics?
    Spain. Spain took 11 silvers compared to 9 from Netherlands and two each from Croatia and Poland.

Finally, the closing ceremony took place on Sunday August 29th 2004. Where will the next Olympiad take place?
    Beijing. The Chinese will host the 2008 games and will certainly be a force in the medal table when it arrives. The Greeks who held this Olympiad won many friends and showed the Olympic ideals to be stronger than ever, after all Greece was the birthplace of this wonderful event.
