It is popular in brown bag lunches, an American term for lunches that are usually taken with people to work or to school. Popular cheese varieties that are used in this sandwich are American, Cheddar, or Swiss cheese. For grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, the slices of bread are coated with butter, then the sandwich is assembled and fried in a pan.
