Special Sub-Topic: Ships named After Famous People


There were at least two ships of this name. They were named after one of the three astronauts killed in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967.

    U.S.S. Grissom. Virgil (Gus) Ivan Grissom died in an Apollo capsule, during a simulated count down, at Cape Canaveral on January 27, 1967. Edward White and Roger Chaffee also died in the fire.

Federation starship: Wambundu class, registry number NCC-20381. The ship was named after an English sea-captain who commanded the 'Golden Hind'.
    U.S.S. Drake. Drake was the first Englishman to sail around the world. It took Drake three years complete the voyage. He set out in 1577 with five ships which were manned by 164 seamen. Most of the sailors thought that they were sailing for the Mediterranean. Drake was in the 'Pelican' which he later renamed the 'Golden Hind'. When he reached the Americas Drake ordered for two of the ships to be destroyed. Another ship later sunk and one turned around and sailed back to England. Drake plundered Spanish ports and ships on the way and managed to returned with his hold full of treasure.

This Federation starship was named after one of greatest leaders of the Shawnee indians.
    U.S.S. Tecumseh. Tecumseh tried to form a confederacy of Indian tribes. His goal was to see a unified Indian nation.

Starship, New Orleans class, Registry number NCC-65530. This ship was named after a philosopher and writer whose works include 'Common Sense' and 'The Rights of Men'.
    U.S.S. Thomas Paine. The commander of the 'Thomas Paine' was Captain Rixx.

A federation starship named after the first man to walk on the moon. The U.S.S. _________?
    Armstrong. Neil's first space flight occurred in 1966 aboard Gemini 8. During this flight he, and fellow astronaut David Scott, successfully performed the first docking in space between two vehicles.

Federation starship with the registry number NX-72307. Named after the science fiction writer who wrote 'The Martian Chronicles'.
    U.S.S. Bradbury. Other works by Bradbury include "Fahrenheit 451', 'The Illustrated Man' and 'Something Wicked This Way Comes'.

This shuttlecraft, attached the Enterprise-D, was named after a brilliant 20th century mathematical physicist who is a Star trek fan. The name of the shuttlecraft is the ________.
    Hawking. Dr Stephen Hawking is the only person who has played himself in a Star trek episode (cameo appearance in 'Descent, part 1').

This Federation Starship, commanded by Captain Conklin, was named after the explorer whose ship was the first to circumnavigate the world.
    U.S.S. Magellan. Magellan set sail from Spain in 1519 with 5 ships and 270 men. Magellan survived two mutinies but he was killed in the Philippines when he got involved in the natives' tribal warfare. Of the ships that set out only one, the 'Victoria', and 18 crew made it back to Spain.

Science vessel, registry number NCC-53911. Named afer a famous Soviet space scientist.
    U.S.S. Tsiolkovsky. Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky, (1857 - 1935) was self educated and handicapped by deafness. His ideas on the use of rockets for space exploration were published in 1903. From 1911 he developed the basic theory of rocketry and multi-stage rocket technology.

An Ambassador class starship, registry number NCC-26632. Named after a spiritual leader who advocated change through non-violent means.
    U.S.S. Gandhi. His was the ship that Lieutenant Thomas Riker served aboard after his rescue in 2369.
