Fun Trivia: M : MLB Historical

Special Sub-Topic: Some Baseball History

Of course you know Jackie Robinson was the first black player in the majors, but who was the first black player in the American League?

Larry Doby. Though largely unheard of, Doby had a pretty fine career himself, twice leading the league in homers.

There are two pitchers tied in wins with 373. Who are they?
Christy Mathewson and Grover Cleveland Alexander. Grover Cleveland Alexander was not surprisingly named after the president of the same name. The great Christy Mathewson died of tuberculosis caused by mustard gas in WWI.

In what year did the great Sandy Koufax retire?
1966. After only 12 years with the Dodgers.

I'm sure you know about Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance, the great doubleplay combo of the 1908 Chicago Cubs. You may even know that Harry Steinfeldt played third base. But do you know who the catcher was?
Johnny Kling. A solid lineup of course, but the greatness of this team was in their pitching staff, led by the great but unfortunately mangled Mordecai "Three-Finger" Brown. They just don't have nicknames like they use too.

With some great nicknames in baseball, what Yankee pitcher of the Ruth era was known by dashing handle, "The Squire of Kennet Square?"
Herb Pennock. A Hall of Fame pitcher who certainly had a lot of run support.

Name the fine first baseman that unfortunately felt under the weather one day in 1925, and was replaced by some guy named Lou Gehrig, who went ahead and played the next 2,130 games at first base for the Yankees.
Wally Pipp. A good player now known only as the guy Lou Gehrig replaced.

For what team did the great Babe Ruth finish his career?
Boston Braves. The Bambino hit his 712, 713 and 714 homers in one game against Pittsburgh hurler Guy Bush. He retired in 1935.

For what team did midget Eddie Gaedel play on for one at-bat in 1951?
St. Louis Browns. Of course the product of the wacky mind of Bill Veeck. Gaedel stood 3 foot 7 inches tall and weighed 51 pounds, according to the Baseball Encyclopedia. He walked on four pitches.

What were the nicknames of Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famers and twin brothers Paul and Lloyd Waner?
Big Poison & Little Poison. Paul, the more deadly was Big Poison, and Lloyd, not too shabby himself was Little Poison.

Which of the following was NOT inducted into the Hall of Fame in its first year?
Cy Young. Rogers Hornsby should have been in there too the first time in 1936.
