    Greyhound. The greyhound is the dog world's most important speed merchant. But regardless of this title, it is a calm, relaxed, and affable companion.

    wolf hunting. The borzoi could easily outrun most wolves. They would work in pairs and grab the wolf behind the ears and pin it to the ground. But for almost a century, the borzoi has been bred for companionship, a job which it is most capable of fulfilling!

    Pharaoh Hound. Skeletal remains indicate that the Pharaoh Hound, or dogs similar to it, have existed in the Middle East for at least 5,000 years. The Pharaoh Hound is often classified as a primitive breed because it hunts by sight, smell and hearing, not just by sight like most sighthounds.

Which sighthound is exceptionally fast, reaching speeds of up to 40 mph over short distances?
    Azawakh. The Azawakh are often seen sleeping on the low, straw roofs of their owners' homes. If a night-time predator were to approach, the first Azawakh to see it would jump down from the roof and then would be joined by the others. They would form a pack and chase away or kill the intruder. It is also used to course game, so it needed to be fast to slow the fleeing quarry until its owner arrived to kill it.

    Podenco Canario. The Podenco Canario often is used to hunt in packs-unusual for a sighthound. The breed is also very adaptive, as it can easily fit into almost any type of environment.

    Whippet. Because the working class were not allowed or couldn't afford a greyhound, they had to make do with the Whippet. Because they also didn't have a fancy oval track, they would race the dogs in the back alleys and empty lots, where the Whippet became a straight-away sprinter.     to catch and kill wolves and coyotes. When the American West was first being opened to settlers, there were many wolves and coyotes. These were a great threat to both livestock and people. The settlers used coursing hounds which were big enough to catch and kill wolves and coyotes to create this increasingly popular breed.

    No. The Mexican Hairless comes in three size varieties. Standard, Miniature and Toy.

Is the Irish Wolfhound the only sighthound that has a rough coat?
    no. The Irish Wolfhound, Scottish Deerhound, Lurcher and American Staghound all have rough coats.

The sighthound's temperment is:
    independent, but loyal, loving & a real clown!. Many people think of the sighthound as a dumb, aggressive dog who can't be taught or has no feelings. The sighthound is an independent, loyal dog who is affectionate with it's own family. They are extremely intelligent but do not follow your commands if they see no point of it. It is often said that once you have formed a bond of trust with a sighthound, it can never be broken.
