Special Sub-Topic: The 1975 World Series

How many games in the 1975 World Series were decided by 1 run?

    5. 5 of the seven games were decided by one run, 2 of which went extra innings and 2 of which were decided in the 9th inning. Only game 2 games (a 6-0 Red Sox win in game one and a game five 6-2 Reds win) were decided by more than one run.

The Red Sox were on the verge of going up 2 games to 0 as they led the second game, 2-1 with two outs in the 9th. Which Red drove in the tying run, stole second, and scored the winning run in the Reds 3-2 victory?
Dave Concepcion. The Reds won 108 games in the regular season and swept the Pirates in the NLCS, but were in danger of falling behind 2 games to 0 to the underdog Red Sox until Concepcion's heroics.

With the score tied at 5 in the bottom of the 10th inning in game 3, this Red attempted a sacrifice bunt. On his way to first base, he collided with Boston catcher Carlton Fisk. Fisk's throw to second base sailed into centerfield, setting up the game winning run. The umpires denied the Red Sox vehement claims for interference. Who was the batter?
Ed Armbrister. Armbrister was a backup outfielder who was pinch-hitting. The Red Sox scored 2 in the 9th to send this game into extra innings (they once trailed 5-1). Even the rule book was controversial in that it contained two conflicting rules. One said the batter has the right to run to first base, and one said the catcher has the right to field the ball.

This Red Sox pitcher with an unusual delivery infuriated the Reds by winning two games in the series and having an unusual stretch (the Reds claimed it was a balk) that slowed their running game.
Luis Tiant. Tiant shutout the Reds in game 1 by a score of 6-0, and beat them again in game 4 by a score of 5-4. His wind-up was unusual in that he turned almost 180 degrees towards centerfield before twisting back around to pitch to the plate. While in a stretch, he would jiggle his hands while he slowly brought them down to his waist. The Reds complained this was a balk.

Game 6 was one of the most memorable games in baseball history as Carlton Fisk won it with a 12th inning home run. But Fisk would have never had a chance if which player hadn't tied the game in the 8th inning with a pinch-hit 3-run home run?
Bernie Carbo. The Red Sox trailed 6-3 when Carbo, a former Red, connected off reliever Rawley Eastwick with two outs in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game.

More game 6 drama took place in the bottom of the 9th inning as the Red Sox loaded the bases with nobody out. Fred Lynn then hit what looked to be a game-winning sacrifice fly, but Denny Doyle was thrown out at the plate by which Reds' outfielder?
George Foster. Fred Lynn lofted a high foul to left field. While the ball was not hit that deep, Foster had to make the catch up against the wall along left field in Fenway Park and was in an awkward position for the throw home. But he threw a strike to catcher Johnny Bench and Doyle was out easily. Later it was revealed that the third base coach was yelling "no, no, no" to Doyle, but with the crowd going crazy, Doyle thought he heard him say "go, go, go."

Fisk's dramatic game 6 home run may have never happened if which player did not make a spectacular leaping game-saving catch in the 11th inning.
Dwight Evans. With Ken Griffey on 1st base and running on the pitch, Joe Morgan hit a long drive to right field. Evans saved at least a double (and possibly a home run), and then threw to first base to double-off Griffey.

The Reds fell behind 3-0 in game 7. Who hit a two-run home run in the 6th inning off the Red Sox Bill Lee to get the Reds back in the game?
Tony Perez. Bill Lee was known for occasionally throwing an extremely slow "blooper" pitch and he had struck Perez out with it earlier in the game. But when he tried it again, Perez crushed it over 400 feet.

With the score tied at 3 in the 9th inning of game 7, who got what proved to be the game winning RBI, as his single drove in Ken Griffey in the Reds' 4-3 win?
Joe Morgan. Morgan, the National League MVP in 1975, had a sub-par series as he batted only .259 with no extra base hits, but he made up for it with this clutch single off reliever Jim Burton.

Who was the MVP of this classic 1975 series?
Pete Rose. Rose won the award by batting .370 and drawing 5 walks. Many of the Reds' big hitters had a sub-par series. Morgan batted .259, Bench batted .207, Concepcion batted .179 and Perez batted .179 (although 3 of his 5 hits were home runs).
