1. The Haida mainly inhabit a group of islands they call the 'Haida Gwaii'. What is the English name for these islands?

Answer: Queen Charlotte Islands

The Haida also inhabited Prince of Wales Island in Alaska. The Queen Charlotte islands is an archipelago of 150+ islands off the west coast of British Columbia, south of Alaska in the Pacific Ocean. The land is made up from a range of rocky coastlines, mountainous ranges and lush green valleys. Aside from fishing, tourism is becoming a major industry.

Answer: eagle and raven

These groups were then divided into hereditary groups, named after their village location.

The population shrank from approximately 10,000 to under 1000.

Bill Reid (who died in 1998) was one of the Haida artists of the modern era, as is Rufus Moody. Charles Edenshaw and John Cross produced work in the latter part of the 19th century and the early 20th century. 'The Raven and the First Men' is a yellow cedar carving depicting the myth of the Raven leading the first men out of a clamshell and into the world.

Answer: Graham Island

Graham Island is the largest of the northern islands, covering 2500 square miles (6500 sq km). If you stand on the west coast of Graham Island, there would be nothing between you and Japan except for the north Pacific Ocean. Moresby Island is the largest of the southern islands, Louise and Langara Islands are smaller islands which make up part of the archipelago.

The potlatch was a very important ceremony, which would last for several days. They were usually held to honour deaths, marriages and the inheritance of names.

The raven is said to have stolen the idea from the beaver. A Haida house often had 30+ people living in it, including family members and slaves.

The canoe was made from red cedar. Haida also made canoes for warfare, in which tens of people could seat.

Answer: Walamti

Walamti was a Chinook village on the banks of the Columbia river, Washington state (USA). Skidegate is known as one of the cultural centres for the Haida in modern day and is named after the chief of the area in the early 19th century. Masset is on the northern shore of Graham Island and was once known as Graham City. Cha'atl is located on the Skidegate Inlet, it was the third largest of the Haida villages behind Skidegate and Masset.
