    y. Mumbai, formerly Bombay, is located on Salsette Island, on the West coast of India. Once comprised of several different islands, they were all merged together in the 1800s and 1900s. India has the second biggest population in the world, after China. The capital is New Delhi.

The Republic of the Maldives is an archipelagic nation situated southwest of India. Which of the following colours is not present on the flag of the Maldives?
    Black. The Maldives achieved independence from the UK on the 26 of July, 1965 and are now the least populous Asian nation. The flag consists of a green rectangle within a red rectangle, and a white Muslim crescent-moon in the centre. The term "The Maldives" comes from "Maale Dhivehi Raajje" which can be translated - in the words of R. Caldwell in the book 'Comparative Dravidian Grammar' - as "The Island Kingdom [under the authority of] Male". Male being the capital city of the Maldives.

Sri Lanka is a tear-drop-shaped island Southeast of India. What is its official name?
    Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Formerly known as Ceylon, Sri Lanka is a country of around 20,000, 000 inhabitants. The nation declared independence from the UK in 1948.

Bhutan is a little-known country high in the mountains located near to, but not bordering, Nepal. Set high in the Himalayas, one of the official languages of Bhutan is English, but what is the other?
    Dzongkha. Dhivehi is a language spoken in the Maldives, whilst Konkani is used in the Goa region of India, and Kannada is spoken in Karnataka, Southern India. Formed in the early 1600s, Bhutan's capital city is Thimphu. The nation is a monarchy with a king and a prime minister.

When the British colonised India, they either Anglicised names of city's or changed them altogether to their preferences. Recently, many Indian cities have changed their names: Calcutta has changed to Kolkata, Bombay has changed to Mumbai, Bangalore to Bengaluru, etc. What did the city formerly known as 'Madras' change its name to?
    Chennai. Chennai is the capital city of the Tamil Nadu state in Southeastern India. It is also the fourth most populous city in the republic of India: in 2007, Chennai had around 7 million people.

Nepal is a mountainous nation North of India, and is perhaps best known for being the location of Mt. Everest, the highest point on Earth. However, what is the second-highest mountain in Nepal?
    Kangchenjunga. Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world: it stands at 8,586m tall, whilst Everest has 8,848m. K2, the second highest mountain in the world, is on the border of China and India/Pakistan (the area is disputed). Nepal is a nation of around 27,133,000 people; this makes it the 40th most populous country in the world. The capital is Kathmandu.

Situated Southeast of Indian sub-continent are the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of the Republic of India. What is the capital and largest city of this area?
    Port Blair. All choices are taken from the names of former British Prime Ministers, although it is important to note that Port Blair, which is situated in the Andaman Islands, is not named after Tony Blair.

Many think the capital of Sri Lanka to be Colombo, the largest city of the island nation. Whilst this city is the commercial capital, it is not the administrative capital and therefore the official capital city. Which city holds this role?
    Sri Jayawardenapura-Kotte. This is the location of the parliament of Sri Lanka and has been since 1982. It is situated Northeast of Colombo.

Amritsar is a city in Northwestern India. It is a Hindu holy city, but is a holy city of another religion also. What religion am I speaking of?
    Sikhism. Situated in the Punjab, Amritsar is a city of around 1 million people. It is the location of the Golden Temple, also known as the Harimandir Sahib, the holiest shrine in Sikhism. The holy cities of Islam are predominantly Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, although Islam is a common religion in India. The main holy city in Buddhism is Lhasa, Tibet, even though Buddhism was founded in India. The main Hindu holy city is Varanasi, situated on the River Ganges.

Finally, Bangladesh was once part of Pakistan, and was known as East Pakistan until its present name came to be. In what year did Bangladesh declare independence from Pakistan?
    1971. Bangladesh declared its independence on the 26th of march, 1971, and, after 9 months of independence wars, attained this status on the 16th of December, 1971. Bangladesh rules its country from the capital, Dhaka, and the official language is Bengali. The country is the 7th most populous in the world, with around 150 million people.
