Fun Trivia: Q : Queen

Special Sub-Topic: The Quicksilver Crown

Which death was Brian May's song "All Dead, All Dead" inspired by?

his cat. You’d never have guessed it, but if you listen closely to the lyrics, it does make sense.

"Death on Two Legs" was dedicated to Queen's much hated former manager. Was his name ever mentioned by Freddie in public?
Yes - on stage at a concert. It provoked legal action.. The song - and "Flick of the Wrist" - were written about the same man, Queen's manager at Trident who paid them peanuts even after their success.

“One Vision” closes with the words “Fried chicken!” The comedy lyric was made up by Freddie in a silly mood while recording, but he never intended to keep it in the final cut - until someone encouraged him. Who?
Jim Hutton. His boyfriend Jim Hutton listened in on that particular session and thought it was worth preserving.

“In the Lap of the Gods” and “In the Lap of the Gods (Revisited)” have the same chorus refrain, but the songs sound completely different. However, they are both exactly the same length. True or false?
False. The printing on my record says they are both exactly 3 minutes and 23 seconds long, but this must be a typo because (Revisited) is actually 3 minutes 45 seconds.

Brian dedicated "Sail Away Sweet Sister" to his own sister. What was her name?
He was an only child. The dedication was to the sister he never had.. Yes, Brian May was an only child. It kind of shows – who is really that nice to their sister?

Which of these unusual words were not used in "The Fairy Feller's Master Stroke"?
fallow. They're all terrifically weird, aren't they? Freddie used all of them in songs, but "fallow" was in "My Fairy King".

Freddie claimed to have written songs in several obscure situations - which of these was NOT one of his?
In his car, driving home from a movie. He wrote "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" in the bath, "Bicycle Race" after seeing the Tour de France, and worked out the lyrics for "I'm Going Slightly Mad" late at night with his singer friend, Peter Straker. But Freddie couldn't even drive a car - it was Brian who thought of "Who Wants to Live Forever" in his car after seeing the rough cut of Highlander.

Brian crafted his guitar, the Red Special, with his own two hands. Years later, the Guitar Guild approached him and asked for his support in making a line of exact replicas of the now legendary instrument. What was the replica called?
The BHM1. These are Brian's initials - Brian Harold May. He was called Harold after his father, who helped him with many projects such as the making of that guitar.

The last song Freddie ever sung, "Mother Love" (found on the "Made in Heaven" album), ends with which sound?
The cry of a baby. The song represents a man's back-to-the-womb longings as the end of his life draws near.

Freddie designed the Queen crest himself. The letter Q is flanked by symbols of the band's star signs and a great winged creature. What kind of creature?
Phoenix. This logo blows me away. It really shows how visually -as well as musically- talented Freddie was. The Mercury Phoenix Trust (in support of AIDS research) was named for this part of the crest.
