    The attack on Lindisfarne Monastery. In 793 AD, Vikings attacked and plundered the Lindisfarne Monastery in Britain. This is the first written record of Viking activity, written by a monk who witnessed the event.

    Bergen. Oslo changed back to Oslo from Christiania. Stiklestad is the place where King Olav the Holy was defeated. Hafrsfjord is where the final battle in the Gathering of Norway took place.

When (approximately) was America first discovered by the Vikings?
    1000. About year 1000, Leiv Eriksson, was the first European to set foot in America. The continent had been discovered a short time earlier by another man, but he did not go ashore.

Who was the Norse god of thunder?
    Thor. When thunder was heard, Vikings believed that Thor rode over the sky in his chariot pulled by two goats, and rained lightning over the earth with his hammer Mjolnir.

What is the Norse gods' home called?
    Aesgard. The gods are called Aeses "æser", and they live in Aesgard "Åsgard". This is a huge fortress built by a giant "jotne" from Utgard.

Who is Ratatosk?
    A squirrel. Ratatosk is the squirrel-messenger from Aesgard. He climbs the world-tree Yggdrasil and brings news to Aesgard from the rest of the world.

    York. York was invaded by Vikings, and they called it "Jorvik". It had been founded by the Romans as Eboracum.

What did the Vikings believe about the rainbow?
    It was a bridge to the gods' home. The rainbow was called "bifrost" and was a bridge from the human lands (Midgard) to the gods' home, Aesgard.

What did Vikings believed happened if one sailed too far into the unknown?
    They fell off the edge of the world. The world was flat, and it was possible to sail off the edge. Then, you came to Helheim.

Which of these was the first Norwegian city?
    Skiringssal. In Skiringssal, the first settlement where people lived in one place the entire year. It is located in Kaupang in Vestfold, Norway.

Where did Odin come from?
    Russia. According to the works by Snorre Sturlason, Odin was a king from the place where the river Tanais "Tanakvisla" runs into the Black Sea.

Who are Hugin and Munin?
    Odin's ravens. These two ravens brought news to Odin.

Where was a dead king buried?
    In a mound. When a great viking died, a grave was constructed (mainly a chest of flat stones), and the grave was covered with a huge load of rocks and dirt. They could be over fifty metres in diameter. Belongings needed in the afterlife was buried with them. This could be a ship, weapons, wives, animals and more.
