    Texas. On this day, General Gordon Granger announced the "Emancipation Proclamation" to the slaves in Texas. These slaves were the very last slaves to be freed after the Civil War had ended. In 1979, "Juneteenth" was declared an official holiday, though it had already been celebrated in Texas and neighboring states.

What cartoon was first released on June 9 in 1934?
    Donald Duck. The episode was called "The Wise Little Hen". Donald played a lazy duck on a houseboat, which is how he got his famous sailor suit. He was voiced by Clarence Nash, who Walt Disney had heard on the radio reciting "Mary Had a Little Lamb". The duck quickly became one of Disney's most famous and beloved characters.

Abner Doubleday, the man said to have invented baseball, was born on this day in 1819:
    June 26. History says he created the game in Cooperstown, New York, in 1839. However, Doubleday was not even in Cooperstown in 1839! Even so, in the city there is a baseball field named after him.

The first attempt at a motion picture was made on June 15, 1878. Why was it done?
    To see if all 4 of a horse's hooves left the ground while it was running. Eadweard Muybridge was the photographer who made the motion picture. He set up twelve cameras along a reacetrack with strings attached to their shutters. When the horse ran by, he broke the strings and tripped the shutters, taking twelve pictures. These showed that - yes, all of a horse's hooves are in the air at once while it runs.

What important event happened on June 13, 1871?
    A hurricane killed 300 in Labrador. The number 13 must really be unlucky. Coincidentally, the fire also happened on June 13, but the year was 1886. The tornado hit on June 17, 1882 and the earthquake occured on February 23, 1887.

    -117 degrees F. The average temperature is –56.9 F.

    Baker Hotel. The other hotels caught on fire on other days, in other states.

Who introduced the fork to Americans on June 25, 1630?
    Governor Winthrop. It was introduced by Governor Winthrop of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Other people thought him strange and rude for using a fork. The popular belief was that using a fork was an insult to God since He gave humans fingers to eat their food.
