|Building a doghouse requires a foundation. What tool would you use to smooth out the concrete?|
trowel. A trowel is a rectangular flat piece of thin metal with a handle on one the back.
Trowels are commonly used to smooth out cement, concrete and Spackle.
|Now on to the walls. What tool would you use to make sure the walls are perpendicular to the ground?|
plumb bob. A plumb bob is a string with a pointed weight at the end. This is one of the oldest hand tools. Most builders don't use a plumb bob anymore as there are specialized levels that do the job.
|OH NO! You have nailed a board to the wrong spot! What tool would be the best to pull the entire board off?|
pry bar. Although a hammer is a good tool for pulling out individual nails it doesn't have enough leverage to pull large objects.
Pry bars go by many names such as heel bars and crowbars and come in a variety of sizes from a 8 inches to many feet long.
|Now it's time to run some wire. Even Fido doesn't like to sit in the dark.
What would you use to splice two wires together?|
wire nut. A wire nut is a plastic cap with metal inside that screws onto both wires.
They come in a variety of colors. Each color indicates the type and size of wire it is to be used with.
|Fido wants running water too! What type of saw would you use to cut the hole so you can run water pipes through the floor.|
hole saw. A hole saw in a cup shaped saw with the teeth along the rim. They are attached to a drill. There are hole saws that cut through anything from granite block to wood to metal.
|Time to cut the drywall. How can you tell what type of material a reciprocating blade cuts?|
By the number of teeth per inch. The number of teeth dictate what the saw will cut though.
Generally, the more teeth per inch the saw has the harder the material it will cut. Typically 6 teeth per inch or less is used on wood. Anything over 14 teeth per inch is used on metal. Diamond teeth are used on stone. Grit or no tooth blade are used on brick and tile.

You've broken off the head of a screw and need to get it out. What you need is a left handed drill bit.|
t. A left handed drill bit operates counter clockwise with the drill in reverse.
It drills into the broken screw and backs the screw out at the same time.
|What would a doghouse be without a dog porch? You need to fasten some bolts to hold up the roof. What tool would you use?|
open end wrench. Open end wrenches usually come in a set with a variety of sizes. They come in both metric and standard. An open end wrench is has a handle in the middle and the ends are crescent shaped.
|Time for the carpet. What tool would you use to install carpet?|
carpet stretcher. A carpet stretcher is a tool about 2 feet long. It has a rectangular angled head that is placed on the edge of the carpet and a square back that is either kicked or hit with the knee. Please wear knee pads with this tool.
|You are almost done. Fido is excited and can't wait to move in. There is one last thing. you need to nail a sign above the door with Fido's name on it.
