Fun Trivia: A : Australia

Special Sub-Topic: Towns & Cities Down Under

This northern city is a great melting pot of nationalities and has an all-year tropical climate. It hosts a regatta every year and is a busy tourist centre. It is very close to Asia, and therefore has a very different feel and vibe to the larger southern centres.

Darwin. Darwin has rebuilt itself, but also re-invented itself since the hugely destructive Cyclone Tracy at Christmas 1974. It has a thriving city centre and a fantastic harbour, and is Australia's gateway to southeast Asia.

I am a town in the northeast corner of Victoria and the area close to where Ned Kelly and his gang roved in the 1800s. I am a regional centre which is growing each year and a fairly popular holiday place for Melbourners, as well as other Victorians.
Wangaratta. Ballarat is near Melbourne, Cooma and Yass are both in NSW near the ACT borders, and Ned Kelly was known to have been very near to Wangaratta but not the other three centres.

I am in a state that has only one house of parliament, unlike most others which have two. I am the first large city close to the NSW border and include a world-famous beach. I attract millions of visitors a year and am a quintessential part of Australia.
Gold Coast. Bondi is not a city, it is a suburb of Sydney, containing world-famous Bondi Beach. Cairns is in Qld, but is very far from NSW! Sydney is also not in Qld.

This city is now a part of Sydney, although is a city in itself. It is also a satellite city, with much historical significance. It is one of Sydney's fastest growing areas with a young population. It is situated around the Hume highway/freeway which will take you to Canberra and Melbourne.
Campbelltown. Newcastle is north on Pacific Hwy, Wollongong is on the Princes Hwy and Picton is a small locality a fair way from the Hume. None of the above three places are part of Sydney.

I am the capital of Australia's island state, Tasmania. I am on the Derwent River and have a cosmopolitan atmosphere with a mild climate. I am Australia's ninth-largest city and contain the Salamanca outdoor markets, Wrest Point casino and a great harbour flanked by mountains.
Hobart. Launceston is in Tassie, but is not the capital. Devonport is also in that category, whilst Dunedin is actually in the South Island in New Zealand! Hobart's outdoor markets are one of Tasmania's most well-known attractions.

I am the capital of Australia. I have a very vibrant entertainment scene with equally diverse restaurant and cafe pleasure, despite being smaller than some of the state capitals. I am also a very beautiful city during the autumn season. One of my liveliest suburbs is Manuka.
Canberra. Canberra indeed has a very lively weekend scene, although at times it can be a little too wild, viz quite a rough younger crowd. The best restaurants and cafes are in the suburb of Manuka (pronounced 'Marnika'), which is only a short distance from the Parliament district.

This city is always summery as it is very near the tropic of Capricorn. It is most famous for being the home of Australia's most well-known rum. It is a beautiful provincial city and is in Queensland.
Bundaberg. Bundaberg ('Bundy') rum is drunk all over the world and has a large polar bear as its mascot. Bundaberg is a quiet town with beaches, a mountain and has many 'Queenslander'- homes that are very historical to this state.

This central Aussie city is near to an icon, which is equally-well known by two names, its English one and its Aboriginal equivalent- Ayers Rock/Uluru. It is very near to this most iconic Australian tourist attraction, after Sydney's Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The Rock was the site of the death of Azaria Chamberlain in 1980 where 'a dingo took my baby'.
Alice Springs. Kalgoorlie is in WA, as are the Kimberleys, which is a mountain range. Bourke is in NSW. The Azaria Chamberlain mystery has recently been re-opened by the Northern Territory Police, but privately, that government believes the truth will never be known.

I am in one of Australia's most progressive and youngest states. I have a multi-cultural population and have excellent beaches and climate, without the extremes of many of Australia's other major cities. I am the capital of a state that was one of Australia's last to vote 'yes' to the 1900 federal referendum.
Perth. Perth is a great holiday destination for Aussies as well as overseas residents, but owing to its great distance from the heavily-populated south-east, it is too costly to get to.

A last question to enjoy on our whirlwind tour: this city is famous for its cultural festivals, wine-growing areas and hot, dry climate. It has been advertised on television throughout Australia and overseas for years as an enjoyable, relaxed, laid-back destination without the crowds of Sydney and Melbourne.
Adelaide. When I was in Adelaide in Feb 04 the daytime temps reached 45 degrees and a low overnight of 34 at one am, which is more than I am used to during the hottest days in Sydney! Adelaide gets very little rain, mostly only in the winter months, but is a beautiful and green city despite the lack of precipitation.
