Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the third British sprinter to achieve gold in the Olympic 100m sprint, following in the footsteps of Harold Abrahams and Alan Wells?

Answer: Linford Christie

Linford took gold in Barcelona in 1992, having eventually taken Silver behind Carl Lewis at the previous Olympics in Seoul, when Ben Johnson was disqualified.
2. Who won a middle distance double by winning the 800m and 1500m at the 2004 Olympics, to take her place as one of the most successful British female athletes of all time?

Answer: Kelly Holmes

What an amazing achievement! She beat her old training partner and rival Maria Mutola, and rightly went on to be voted Sports Personality of the Year 2004 by a huge majority. She was only the third woman in history to achieve this double, and only the seventh British woman ever to win an Olympic athletics gold medal.
3. Which athlete had never won an Olympic gold medal, in spite of having won a host of titles and held the world record for the 110m high hurdles?

Answer: Colin Jackson

Colin was an extremely successful athlete during his career, carving a niche for himself as an almost unbeatable hurdler, starting with Commonwealth and European Championship golds in 1990, and rounding off his illustrious championship career with his fourth successive European Championship victory in 2002.

In spite of setting the world record for the 110m hurdles in Stuttgart in 1993, he never managed to win Olympic gold, the one blot in an otherwise outstanding career.
4. As well as finding huge success as part of the British 4x400m relay team, which event was larger than life athlete Kriss Akabusi a specialist in?

Answer: 400 metres hurdles

Kriss was a regular fixture in the British relay squad, where he often ran the crucial anchor leg in spite of not being a specialist 400m flat runner. This was due to his amazing tenacity and determination which made him feared by the world's best. The pinnacle of Akabusi's career came at the World Championships in 1991, when he took bronze in his own event, 400m hurdles, then went on to clinch gold for the 4x400m squad, beating world number 1 ranked USA team into second.
5. One of Northern Ireland's most famous athletes was Mary Peters. In which event did she find success?

Answer: Pentathlon

She took Olympic gold at the Munich games in 1972. Unfortunately, successes at those games were tragically overshadowed by the assassination of Israeli athletes in the athletes' village.
6. In which field event did Steve Backley and Mick Hill both have long and illustrious careers for Great Britain, winning a combined total of 19 Commonwealth, European, World and Olympic medals from 1988 to 2003?

Answer: Javelin

Steve had a long and illustrious career, but left athletics never having won the elusive Olympic gold. His biggest rival throughout his career was Jan Zelezny of the Czech Republic, who was rather more successful in Olympic terms, winning no less than 3 golds in 1988, 1992 and 1996. Mick Hill also had a long international career, being a regular member of the British squad at international competitions and winning a total of 6 championship medals.
7. Young and virtually unknown athlete Kelly Sotherton, took an unexpected but very much deserved silver medal at the 2004 Athens Olympics. What was her event?

Answer: Heptathlon

Kelly followed in the footsteps of British Olympic great Denise Lewis, who won gold in the same event in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. Denise was also competing in the heptathlon in Athens, making a creditable return to athletics after taking time out for the birth of her daughter Lauren in April 2002.
8. The ten events in the decathlon are the 100m, 400m, 1500m, 110m hurdles, long jump, high jump, pole vault, and which three throwing events?

Answer: Shot, discus, javelin

The hammer does not form part of a decathlon.
9. Which of the following women's field events was included in the Olympic program for the first time in Sydney 2000?

Answer: Pole Vault

The women's hammer was also introduced at those games, meaning that the women's field events matched those contested by the men.
10. Which athlete, who was knighted in 1975 for his achievements in athletics, was the first man ever to run a sub-four minute mile?

Answer: Roger Bannister

May 1954: Brasher and Chataway were friends of Bannister, and he employed them to set the early pace and ensure that he ran the first 3/4 of a mile fast enough. The Australian John Landy was Bannister's main rival, the other man who experts believed was capable of beating the four minute barrier.

Indeed he did so less than a month later. The two men met at the British Empire Games in July of that year in what was billed as the "Mile of the Century". Bannister won, confirming his position as world number one. Astonishingly, Bannister achieved all this while undertaking full-time medical studies at Oxford University.

He later became a respected neurologist.
