    six. Phelps became only the second athlete in any sport to receive eight total medals in a single Olympics and the first swimmer to do it. Aleksandr Dityatin was the first athlete to win eight gold medals. He did it in the 1980 boycotted Olympics in Moscow in the sport of gymnastics. Along with his six golds, Phelps won two bronze medals as well.

    Mohini Bhardwaj. But Bhardwaj didn't go home empty-handed. She won a silver medal in the team competition.

    Wariner & Jeremy Wariner. Harris won the silver, and Brew won the bronze.

Misty May and Kerri Walsh, an American beach volleyball duo, won the gold medal. But how did the other duo from the USA, Holly McPeak and Elaine Youngs, fare in these Olympic Games?
    They won the bronze. McPeak and Youngs played May and Walsh in the semifinals, but lost to the dynamic duo. So they headed to the bronze medal game and defeated Australia.
