Fun Trivia: U : United in the 2000s

Special Sub-Topic: United's Jersey Numbers: 2008 [2]

Who took the number 16 after Roy Keane's unexpected departure in 2005?

Michael Carrick. Roy Keane left Manchester United very unexpectedly in November 2005. November is not a transfer month, but Keane had been having difficulties getting along with other United players and the staff. It angered Ferguson even more when Keane said he would, "be prepared to play elsewhere", in an MUTV interview. On December 15, 2005, Keane moved to Scotland to play for the team he grew up supporting, Celtic.

Which play-maker wore number 18?
Paul Scholes. Scholesy had been with United his entire life. Most of his goals from 2006-2008 were screamers from outside the box. One of his goals was very crucial, without it, United would not have contested the Champions League Final in 2008. In the 2006-07 season, Scholes got Goal of the Season against Aston Villa with a 20-yard volley.

This Irishman usually played as a defender and wore the number 22. Who am I describing?
John O'Shea. John O'Shea was a great defender. He could play anywhere Sir Alex needed him to play. In the 2006-07 season, all his shots were on target and he scored 80% of them. He scored the same number of goals as Chelsea's record-signing Andriy Shevchenko, who won the Ballon D'or in 2004.

A dynamic midfielder who wore the number 24, who is he?
Darren Fletcher. In the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons, Fletcher played very little. In 2006-07, he was mostly on the bench because Sir Alex Ferguson wanted the midfield to consist of Giggs, Scholes, Carrick, and Ronaldo. In 2007-08, Darren played even less than the season before. Nani, Owen Hargreaves, and Carlos Tevez who all had just arrived at United that summer, played more than Fletcher throughout the season.

United's second choice goal-keeper, Kuszczak, wore number 29 during 2008. What is the correct spelling of his first name?
Tomasz. On Kuszczak's United debut against Arsenal, he gave away a penalty. He earned the fans respect after saving the penalty taken by Gilberto Silva. Kuszczak was also the second choice goal keeper for the Polish national team, with Artur Boruc being the first choice keeper.

The striker who wore number 32 was very popular with the fans, scoring some very stunning and important goals. Which striker was this?
Carlos Tevez. In Tevez's first year at United, he scored a load of important and amazing goals, 19 all together. When Tevez was a toddler, a pot a boiling water was spilled on him, it left 3rd degree burns down the right side of his face and neck. Today, the scars are noticeable, and an important feature of Tevez, who did not want to get them fixed. He turned down offers from Boca Juniors to get his scars removed while he played for them, saying that the scars are one of the many important things that make him the man he is today. Because of the arrival of Dimitar Berbatov at the beginning of the 2008-09 season, Tevez was forced to warm the bench, very unfairly. After basically "winning" United the Champions League Final in 2008 by sparking the fight that led to Didier Drogba's sending off. He started the Carling Cup Quarter Final against Blackburn and scored 4 goals throughout the match. Tevez only started a few games during the first half of the 2008-09 season, but he did more for the team than Berbatov who just stood on the pitch every game.

This amazing midfielder wore the number 7 before Cristiano Ronaldo. He was best known by his ability to bend the ball perfectly around walls, and also had a movie named after him.
David Beckham. "Bend it Like Beckham" is the movie named after David, and David Robert Joseph Beckham is his full name. When David was a kid, he and his family were huge Manchester United fans. They often went to United's home games at Old Trafford. When David signed for United, he wore number 10. After Eric Cantona retired, Beckham took the iconic number 7 and definitely lived up to its legendary history. When United was playing Wimbledon on August 17, 1996, David scored from inside his own half after noticing Neil Sullivan was a long way off his goal line. The goal has been remembered and always will be.

This Dutch international was born on July 1, 1976. He is United's former number 10. Who is he?
Ruud van Nistelrooy. He scored 150 goals in just 220 appearances in a span of 5 years for United. Ruud van Nistelrooy ended up leaving United after having spats with Sir Alex Ferguson and Cristiano Ronaldo. Van Nistelrooy just wasn't able to get along with his coaches. In World Cup 2006 Germany, in the Round of 16 match against Portugal, van Nistelrooy was benched because he couldn't get along with his coach, Marco Van Basten. That saw his country get eliminated from the World Cup.

Which French forward wore number 9 before Dimitar Berbatov?
Louis Saha. Louis Saha's time at United was very interrupted by injuries. He scored some important goals, but he just never really got the chance to be a really popular player with the fans because of all his injuries. He moved to Everton in the summer of 2008. If he hadn't gone, United would not have signed Dimitar Berbatov.

Who was United's former number 20 who was nicknamed "The Baby Faced Assassin"?
Ole Gunnar. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer certainly did not miss the goal very often. He was the hero of United's Champions League triumph in 1999 and several others. Ole was nicknamed "The Baby Faced Assassin" because of his baby face and his ability to rip apart defenses.
