Fun Trivia: A : Auel, Jean M.

Special Sub-Topic: Valley of Horses

When we first enter the book, whose point of view are we in?

Ayla. The book begins with the words "She was dead. What did it matter if icy needles flayed her skin raw." We don't hear from Broud at all and Thonolan and Jondalar don't enter until the next chapter.

What is the first animal (to our knowledge) that attacks Thonolan?
wooly rhinoceros. They are hunting when the rhino turns around and gores him. The Sharamudoi then rescue him.

Who used to carry the coals for the Clan?
Grod. Brac and Grev were Oga's sons. Gorn got killed by Ursus at the clan gathering.

When Ayla considers killing herself, what is the method she considers?
drowning herself. She considers it, but remembers she had said that Broud would not make her die.

What was the gender of Shamud of the Sharamudoi?
we don't find out in this book. I didn't notice anything hinting at it until "The Plains of Passage".

What is the name of the woman Thonolan marries?
Jetamio. Jetamio and Thonolan are mated. Jetamio later dies giving birth to a child.

What is the name of the woman who takes care of Thonolan's mate?
Roshario. Jetamio's mother died when she was young, and Roshario adopted her.

What is the first word Ayla says? (other than her name)
Duh-Da. Since she was raised with the Clan of The Cave Bear and has relied on sign language most of her life, Ayla's auditory skills aren't that impressive.

What prompts Ayla to learn speaking?
A dream in which her mother talks to her. She wakes up and tells Jondalar about her dream.

What convinces Ayla to go with the Mamutoi?
She sees Talut laughing. Ayla was about ready to go back to her valley until she saw Talut laugh.
