Special Sub-Topic: Which Chinese Province Am I?


Situated along the ancient Silk Route, I am home to the ‘Mogao Buddhist Caves’, a World Cultural Heritage Site .

    Gansu. Gansu used to comprise the today separate province of Ningxia. Although the Yellow River flows through it, it is for the most part a desert province, the capital city being Lanzhou.

I am home to one of China’s spiciest cuisines, the World Natural Heritage Park Wu Ling Yuan and also to Mao Ze Dong, the long-time leader of China.
    Hunan. The name means ‘South of the Lake’, and the capital city is Changsha. It’s short name is ‘Xiang’.

My capital city used to be the capital of China. In another of my famous cities, Suzhou, you can visit China’s most beatiful classical gardens.
    Jiangsu. Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu, was the capital of China for most parts of the Chinese Republic (1911-1949).

I am home to the Giant Panda and one of China’s most popular cuisines.
    Sichuan. In May 2008 Sichuan was ravaged by a horrible Earthquake. Si Chuan means ‘Four Rivers’, it is also known as ‘Shu’. The capital is Chengdu.

I am also known to the Chinese as ‘Chu’. The Yangtze river winds through me, and my capital city is Wuhan.
    Hubei. Hubei means ‘North of the Lake’. The area of Chu used to be a major player in the warring states period.

I am home to Confucius and to China’s holiest mountain, the Tai Shan.
    Shandong. Also known under it’s short form ‘Lu’, Shandong means ‘East of the Mountains’. The port city of Qingdao can also be found in Shandong. The capital is Jinan.

My name comes from the Chinese name for the Amur river. I am China’s northernmost province and my only international border is with Russia.
    Heilongjiang. Heilongjiang means ‘Black Dragon River’. The capital city is Harbin, which holds an annual Ice Sculpture Festival.

I am a rich coastal province and my capital Hangzhou was once renowned as one of the most beautiful cities in China.
    Zhejiang. In Hangzhou, you can tour the famous West Lake park area.

I am home to the well-preserved ancient merchant city of Pingyao, Mount Heng Shan and the Hanging Temple as well as the Yungang Buddhist grottoes.
    Shanxi. Shanxi province is said to be the ancestral home of the Han ethnicity, which now comprises the majority of Chinese. The province is also known as ‘Jin’, and the capital is Taiyuan.

I am a province in the Northeast of China, home to a mountain nature park and holy lake shared with North Korea.
    Jilin. Jilin is the provinces with the highest Korean population in China. The Changbai Mountains with the Heavenly Lake are a famous tourist attraction. Literally Jilin means ‘Auspicious Forest’. It’s capital is Changchun, the ‘Long Spring’.

I am the homeland of the Manchu people, who established the Qing dynasty to rule over the Han from 1644 – 1911. The old palace of the Qing dynasty can be visited in my Capital.
    Liaoning. The capital Shenyang was formerly known as Mukden, and famous for the Mukden incident which was used as a pretext for Japanese occupation of the whole of Manchuria.

I am home to many ancient Chinese capitals, such as Kaifeng, Anyang and Luoyang. Near Luoyang you will also find a marvelous collection of Buddhist cave art.
    Henan. Henan is the most populous of all Chinese provinces in terms of registered citizens. The name means “South of the (Yellow) River” It’s capital city is Zhengzhou.

The Yellow River, the Yangtze and the Mekong all have their sources on my territory. I have a substantial Tibetan population.
    Qinghai. Qinghai translates as ‘Blue Lake’. Qinghai is the largest lake in Chin

I am home to the ancient Chinese capital of Changan, and it’s marvelous army of Terrakotta warriors.
    Shaanxi. The army was commissioned to guard the tomb of the first Qin Emperor, Qin Shi Huang Di (259 BC – 210 BC). The current capital of Shaanxi is Xi’an (Western Peace), not far from the old capital. Another attraction in Shaanxi are the precipitous Hua Shan Mountains.

I am home to China’s arguably most varied cuisine. Known as China’s port to the world, many overseas’ Chinese call this southern province their ancestor’s homeland. Culturally and linguistically, Hong Kong would be part of me.
    Guangdong (Canton). Cantonese food is popular all over the world. Guangdong is also known in China as ‘Yue’. The capital Guangzhou (Canton) and Shenzhen are major cities.

I am home to China’s most famous mountains, the Yellow Mountain, as well as the ancient towns of Hongcun and Xidi , who have been named World Heritage Sites.
    Anhui. Anhui, with it’s capital Hefei, is also a producer of famous green tea.

I am a coastal province. My language is widely spoken in Taiwan, as well as in Singapore and other Chinese communities outside of China.
    Fujian. Fujianese (also known as Hokkien) is spoken in Taiwan and wide parts of South-East Asia. The short name for the province is 'Min'.

I am one of China’s less developed provinces, and the ancestral home of the Miao people. I am also home to China’s most famous liquor, the Mao Tai, and China’s largest waterfall.
    Guizhou. Guizhou is a landlocked province, the capital being Guiyang.

I am bordering the countries of Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam, and am home to 36 of the 56 ethnic groups in China.
    Yunnan. Yunnan means ‘South of the Clouds’. The World Heritage Site ‘Old Town of Lijiang’ can be toured in Yunnan, as well as the Tiger Leaping Gorge and the mysterious Shangri-La.

I am home to the Zhuang minority, and the beautiful scenery of the Li river meandering through outworldly Karst peaks.
    Guangxi. The Zhuang autonomous region, also known as Guangxi, borders Vietnam, and is also known as ‘Gui’, the capital being Nanning.
