Tambor, born on July 8th, 1944 in San Francisco, California was cast as Dr. Melvin Potts. Dr. Potts was a psychiatrist at Claymoore Hospital, where Susanna voluntarily committed herself, and he was assigned to be her doctor. After completing an evaluation of Susanna, Dr. Potts diagnosed her as having Borderline Personality Disorder. Dr. Potts made this diagnosis since Susanna made it clear she was sexually promiscuous and had no goals in life, which are two symptoms of the disorder.

In one scene, Susanna and Dr. Potts were in a session and Susanna exclaimed how she was feeling better and Dr. Potts was shown sleeping.

In a couple of scenes, Dr. Potts met with Susanna's parents to talk to them about her progress and he informed them she would be institutionalized for a while. Tambor had roles in the films, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", "The Hangover", and "Pollock".

She told the attendant she never tried to kill herself so the attendant told her to talk about it in therapy. In one scene, Susanna was shaving her legs, in the bathtub, and the head nurse, Valerie Owens, supervised her so she would not injure herself. Kaysen had a good relationship, with Valerie, and it was through her help that she managed to improve her health to the point of where she could be discharged from the hospital. Ryder starred in the movies, "Mr. Deeds", "Edward Scissorhands", and "Beetle Juice".

He went to the hospital, on many occasions, to see Susanna and they went to a private location to talk. Toby told Susanna that he wanted to go to Canada, to dodge the draft, but Susanna assured him she would not run away from the hospital.

In one scene, they were shown having sex in a part of the hospital, but they were not caught by any of the staff members. Susanna and Toby eventually broke up. Leto was seen in the movies, "Urban Legend", "Panic Room", and "The Thin Red Line".

Near the end of the movie, Valerie decided to practice some tough love with Susanna, so she picked her up and dumped her in a bathtub. Valerie told Susanna that she had seen many crazy people, over her tenure as a nurse at psychiatric hospitals, but that Susanna was not crazy. Just before Susanna got in a cab to go home, after being released, she hugged Valerie and Valerie reminded her to remember her when she shaved her legs, in reference to an earlier scene in the film. Goldberg starred in the films, "Eddie", "Ghosts of Mississippi", and "Sister Act".

In 1991, Goldberg received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the film, "Ghost". Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress, that year, were Mary McDonnell for "Dances with Wolves", Lorraine Bracco for "Goodfellas", Annette Bening for "The Grifters", and Diane Ladd for "Wild at Heart".

Redgrave, a native of London, England, had the small role of Dr. Sonia Wick. Dr. Wick was the head psychiatrist at Claymoore Hospital and she decided to speak to Susanna in one session. In the session, Dr. Wick tried to get Susanna to understand her illness and what she could do to get better and Susanna commented, to Dr. Wick, that she was ambivalent. Dr. Wick told her about ambivalence and stated she did not believe that Susanna was ambivalent. Dr. Wick decided to take on Susanna's case, relieving Dr. Potts of it.

At the end of the movie, Dr. Wick decided that Susanna was well enough to be released from the hospital, after she had stayed there for well over a year. Redgrave was seen in the movies, "Venus", "Mission: Impossible", and "Agatha".

In 1978, Redgrave won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the movie, "Julia". Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actress, that year, were Melinda Dillon for "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", Tuesday Weld for "Looking for Mr. Goodbar", Quinn Cummings for "The Goodbye Girl", and Leslie Browne for "The Turning Point".

Midway through the movie, Daisy was released and got her own apartment.

When Susanna and Lisa escaped the hospital, they went to Daisy's home and Lisa and Daisy got into a fight and Lisa upset Daisy immensely.

The next day Susanna called out for Daisy but could not find her. When she went to Daisy's room, she discovered that Daisy had hung herself. Murphy had roles in the movies, "Uptown Girls", "8 Mile", and "Don't Say a Word". Murphy passed away on December 20th, 2009 as a result of complications from pneumonia, anemia and drug intoxication.

DuVall, born on September 25th, 1977 in Los Angeles, California, was cast as Georgina Tuskin. Georgina was Susanna's roommate, at Claymoore and Valerie introduced Georgina to Susanna. Valerie remarked that Georgina was an excellent roommate. Susanna asked Georgina why she was at Claymoore and Georgina simply responded that she was a pathological liar. During Susanna's first night at Claymoore, a nurse entered hers and Georgina's room to check on them. Susanna asked Georgina what that was about and Georgina told her they do checks throughout the night, to make sure the patients were alright.

In one scene, Georgina was seen with the other patients, as they went to a secret location to play bowling. At the end of the movie, Lisa read Georgina some passages from Susanna's diary, in which Susanna insulted Georgina. Georgina confronted Susanna about the passages and blasted her for badmouthing her. Right before Susanna left the hospital, upon discharge, she and Georgina made up. DuVall had guest starring stints on the TV shows, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", "Heroes", and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit".

Moss, born in 1982 in Los Angeles, portrayed Polly "Torch" Clark in "Girl, Interrupted". Polly befriended Susanna and got along with the other patients on the ward. Her most distinct physical feature was a scarred face and Susanna asked Georgina how she got the scars. Georgina told her that, when Polly was little, she set herself on fire but she survived and that was where she got the scars. Polly was diagnosed with schizophrenia and also showed signs of severe depression when, in one scene, she broke down over her setting herself on fire when she was little.

At the end of the movie, when Lisa read aloud Susanna's diary passages about the other patients, Polly's feelings were hurt when Susanna belittled her in her diary. Just before Susanna left the hospital, she apologized to Polly for badmouthing her and there were times that even she did not believe everything she wrote. Polly accepted her apology and they embraced. Moss guest starred on the TV shows, "The Practice" and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent". For 25 episodes, Moss portrayed First Daughter Zoey Bartlet on the NBC primetime drama series, "The West Wing".
