Fun Trivia: V : Video Games T-Z

Special Sub-Topic: Wing Commander

First off: what carrier are you stationed on?

TCS Tiger's Claw. 'TCS' stands for Terran Confederation Starship.

What class of ship is the Tiger's Claw?
Bengal-class. The largest carrier in service in the TCN at the time. The Exeter is a destroyer, as is the Gilgamesh; the latter is only in "Wing Commander II."

What three classes of fighters are originally assigned to the Tiger's Claw?
Raptor, Hornet and Scimitar. The new Rapier-class fighter is added to the ship's compliment later on.

What is the first fighter you get to fly on the Tiger's Claw?
Hornet. You have the oppourtunity to fly the others in later missions, however.

Who is the commanding officer of the Claw?
Colonel Halcyon. He also conducts all the briefings on the Claw (shouldn't the CAG be doing this?).

Coming back to the Hornet, what kind of guns does it carry?
Laser cannons. They don't do much damage, but they have the best range of any gun, and you can fire them basically forever without draining the capacitors.

What missiles does the Hornet carry?
Two dumbfire, one heat-seeking. Only three missiles means you have to use them carefully and judiciously; the dumbfires are excellent against capital ships, however.

What is the name of the Claw's bartender?
Shotglass. It's the only name we hear, at least. He's retired from the space forces; a former pilot.

What was the bartender's former occupation?
Fighter pilot. Talk to him enough, and he'll mention it.

Who is the protagonist (you) in this story?
Christopher Blair. Casey and Marshall are other pilots. Tolywn doesn't show up until "Wing Commander II."

Which is the most heavily armed (and armoured) TCN fighter you can pilot in "Wing Commander"?
Raptor. Two Gatling mass driver cannons, two neutron guns, and an impressive array of missiles, combined with heavy shields and armour, good acceleration, a suprisingly high maximum speed, and decent manoeuverablility makes the Raptor, in my opinion, the best fighter craft in "Wing Commander".

Which of the following does the Raptor have that no other TCN fighter has?
Porcupine space mine. It's gone one of 'em. The Rapier also has two different types of guns, and none of the fighters are jump-capable or capable of cloaking. Never found much use for the mine, myself.

With who is the Terran Confederation at war in "Wing Commander"?
The Kilrathi. Resembling 8-foot cats, the Kilrathi Empire has been at war with the Terran Confederation for twenty-five years (and the war will last ten more).

Which is the most powerful Kilrathi fighter?
Jalthi. The Hriss-class doesn't show up until the add-on for "Wing Commander." The Jalthi is armed with three neutron guns and three laser cannons; two hits will destroy any fighter. Fortunately, it's slow and unweidly, and thus easy to manoeuver behind and destroy.

What is the only Kilrathi destroyer in "Wing Commander"?
Ralari-class. You'll run into several of them, and their flak cannons can do decent damage. Rear attacks, once their escorts are gone, work well, but it'll take a few passes.

What's special about mission two in the Kurasawa system?
You have to defend a Kilrathi ship. Apparantly, TCN Marines have captured a Ralari-class destroyer, and you have to defend it from a flight of four Grathas. This mission is notorious for being almost impossible, and by far the most difficult mission in "Wing Commander." You get to fly the very cool Rapier-class medium fighter, though.

Which of the following is not a technology present in "Wing Commander"?
Cloaking device. Cloaks don't show up until "Wing Commander II."

"Wing Commander" has a multiplayer mode.
    F. "Wing Commander: Armada" does, and as does the GBA version of "Wing Commander: Prophecy."

In "Wing Commander", capital ships have special shields, making them immune to fighter weapons.
    F. You can destroy any ship, even a Fralthi-class carrier, with laser cannons.

In the last mission, you need missiles to destroy the starbase.
    F. Nope, despite what Halcyon tells you. They make it easier though, especially considering you're under constant attack from Kilrathi fighters.
